Quick question, has anyone used pigment ink vinyl for use on photographic style printers ? (We have a HP Z6200)
I know its alot more expensive due to its coating, but wondered when laminated if it lasts the same as the uncoated version – We’ve got a flat sign coming up that requires a small full colour logo which I’d normal buy in… but… just wondering….

    Cheers in advance!

Colin even when laminated the prints will not last the same way that solvent prints last.
People will say if you use a decent laminate then the prints will last for 3 years outdoors but I have yet to find a supplier who will warrant a print for anything longer than a year to 18 months.

Personally I would buy the graphic in for the job rather than use my own printer & risk gaining a bad reputation just to make a couple of quid extra.

I was thinking that myself – but these sales rep’s can be very good 😮

Got a sample roll of 5m that I’ll keep for my own items or indoor use

    Cheers Martin

Colin, what was the sales rep telling you?? Were they prepared to actually put something in writing or was it all just verbal sales pitch??

I have a machine that is capable of printing just about every job I do but I don’t use it for anything outdoor unless it is short term stuff & this is explained to the customer & on the invoice so no come backs on me.
Anything for actual sign or vehicle work that I need I buy in from a trade supplier. Don’t get asked that often to be honest which is why I can’t justify buying a solvent machine of my own.

The normal verbal stuff ! – How good the product is, and you can use it for outdoor work (But like you say, the don’t give details), also tried to get me to look at banner material – that I straight away said no thanks!

I’m pretty much in same boat as you, 90% of my work is indoors or cut vinyl and can’t really justify a solvent printer – prehaps one day (plus this HP Z6200 wasn’t cheap!)

I’ll stick to buying it in for now, but will experiment with this vinyl for short term work and post results here.

You can buy banners printed using solvent inks so cheaply these days it’s not worth trying to do them on a pigment ink machine.

I bought a second user machine that needed some work doing so didn’t pay a fortune for it & was lucky enough to be able to get it up & running.
I have already printed samples which are outside on the unit wall which receives a fair bit of sun (when it’s about).
Will just wait and see how long they last before they start to fade & how long they keep some sort of colour after they start to fade.
