Personalised numberplates for your car or workvan ?
Just wondering how many people in the uk have personalised plates related to their business.
How about some suggestions and some pictures.
I seem to remember adrian having them on an ML merc and his van, and someone else had V 1 NYL on a jag?
I’m in the process of getting one on my van and I’ll show it in a couple of weeks when it’s all done.

Ive got one put on my van R30 FFS as i couldn’t get one related to signs, well worth a search on the DVLA website, that’s where i got mine

Hey roffy,
Did you pay £250 for it ….the dvla website lists my plate as £250 and says their prices are inclusive of vat & transfer fee.Before finding the direct DVLA website , I looked at some large numberplate dealer sites and they list the same plate at £250 PLUS the vat Plus the £80 transfer fee taking the cost to 360ish. Is this how the sneaky sods make their money?

hey joe,
if you’ve seen the plate on the DVLA website for £250 that is the full amount that you pay ( that’s what i paid ) if you go to the dealers they put there bit on and get the plates from DVLA anyway,
what plate have you got in mind??

What are the rules out there for personalization?
Out here you can just about anything up to 7 letters/numbers. My Dad used to have just our last name on his plate, not really sure why. Mine would be “SrfnSnw” or something like that.

a bit off topic i know folks but i had a visit from the traffic cops about a year ago suggesting that i didn’t make anymore plates up for boy racers ,,,,but they couldn’t give me any hard or fast rules up .I mean i can see the point of using script or any type face that is not illegible ..but i wasn’t .Anyway the plates ain’t worth the hassle as I’m sure a lot of you know by now

i went to buy one but it wasnt available till recently. so i went back 2 weeks ago as i remembered. thinking yes… ill get this before all else and the prices kick in… out the list of all available under that sequence the one i want was took, the rest had all went upto £1600. 👿
i can still get the exact same one bar the last digit, but the price is got me sick to the bone as if i had just prebooked or something, anything! 😕 -

I got one from DVLA too, I wanted M4RCY but that was gone and was very expensive…. instead I have M6RSY.

well i cant say what i was gonna buy as the reg is still availble bar 1 digit. the digit is at the end and doesnt need included so reads exact same. problem was with the one that was took, the end digit could have been included too making the full reg relevant to why i wanted it. 😕 like i say its the cost of it thats killing it for me. i still think if i bought it i could easily double my money but its the will i gamble will i not? 🙁

Depends on the relevance. If it is quite specific to you, it probably wont go up in price. The more general the relevance, the more chance of it increasing in price. I have never lost on any number that I have bought or sold in over 20 years of ‘playing’ with them. However, the good numbers without prefix letters are harder to come by so the newer ones with more letters are getting more valuable.

thats just it mate, its open to anyone, this plate i mean…
it includes all digits bar the last like i said, but the one i wanted the last digit could have been included anyway, so still read ok.is £1700 allot to pay for a plate and still make money? i know many fetch thousands but just in general. or is that “how long is a peace of string” type question. :lol1:
edit- the real reason i was intrested was it would have been a snip at £380 but has shot up after one plate in the family being sold.

Nothing to do with signs but my favourite plates are CLA 551 C seen on very nice vintage car in Berkshire and FAT 91T (Fat Git) which I suppose would suit me!

It is hard without knowing the number but in the end it is down to can you afford it and would it make you happy. I doubt any number will lose money if and when resold. There are few ways to be individual in this world and people seem to have been inspired by plates. The newest thing of course is mobile numbers but they will never take off in the way car plates have in the last few years. Of course the government caused the whole thing to explode when they got involved. Easy tax income 🙁
By the way, Jimmy Tarbuck has COM 1 C. Paul daniels has MAG 1 C and Beryl Reid the comedienne has BRE 1 DI say buy it and treat yourself. From what I have been reading on the boards that only adds up to a months supply of breezers anyway 😉

Not so long ago the number R1CHD (Richard) was still available on the DVLA site for only £500. I remember seeing this and almost buying it for a friend of mine (He would have been expected to pay it back of course). I’m really sorry I didn’t buy it as the number is no longer available and I reckon it could be worth £1000’s.
My own numbers are specific to my own business name so are pretty worthless to any one else but me so will never go up in value 🙁
My Brother in law has the number DSS 777 – he’s on the dole and gets £777 a week in income support. 😕
(Just kidding – He really does have the number though and it’s on a Porsche – He’s an insurance broker 🙄 )

I got OO03 CLD on my car, as “O’s” and “0’s” are the same in that font, it reads 0003 CLD, paid £800 for that one.
Have H5 TPE on one van (Company used to be called Hatherley Signs, and when I started a mate of mine called it Tin Pot Enterprises hence the TPE), and H15 TPE on another, paid £250 each for those.
Got me thinking about the other Van now which doesn’t have one!

i pestered dvla for two years for aplate that read MOP4R, mopar is the umbrella name for all things chrysler (dodge, plymouth etc), motorsport related in particular, as i was a long time trader of the stuff… the mopar man uk, i thought what better plate to have,
well at the end of two years of pestering i think they got fed up with telling me it wasnt available, and they had no plans to release it, ever, but should it be released, they’d let me mknow when it was due for auction.
6mnths later, i see a pgoto of a pals jeep, with MY plate on it, i phoned him up, he said he’d called them, they said if he was prepared to pay at least £280+vat for it, they’d put it to auction, they neglected to tell me of course, so he got it for just £280 +vat. gutted is an understatement !

All My family have Private reg’s, most have family initials with consecutive numbers after them. Chelmsford council at one time had both F1 & 1F, I know they sold one of them, i think it was the F1 plate as I’m sure I’ve seen the 1F plate on a black stretch Volvo limo, And there’s a guy who lives in Billericay (near brentwood Essex) that has The Reg PEN 1 S

we use different manufacturers for different jobs. we mainly do flat glass window film and frosted graphics.
if somebody specifies a particular brand of film, we will use it.
we do not particularly sell a specific brand of film, we just promote our company offering a supply and install service of the most suitable window film for the job.

No, WF , I haven’t got the plate yet so can’t say as I’ve lost out one one already…one relates to signs and one relates to tint and I cant decide but the sign one is better as it relates perfectly to my company name.
You’re very cautious about telling what brand of film you use….I do mostly auto using Suntek HP, love the stuff, great film. Llu & Jonsns won’t deal with me as they have peeps in Bristol already.
Tried some 3M on Friday on a car, but didn’t like it as much as Suntek.

if youre not fast, youre last! The thing with number plates and domain names is that if you want them, you do need to buy them when you see them. I have missed out like that before. Very frustrating!

Just waiting for the van ( only a yr 2001 vito ) and as soon as it’s here ( possibly wed ) I’ll be on to the DVLA to get the plate.
Trouble is I’ll have to go for the “sign” one as you have all the good tint ones! :lol1: :lol1:

do all reg plate sites sell at virtually the same price? i.e are they all linked to one engine and price according to book?
which sites are good for searching for plates? (got a couple just now that i use, but just incase) 😉

try the DVLA site Rob, it;s much cheaper, as the others add more on top of DVLAs prices.
You can use outside sites for seaching as you can do “keyword” type searching, but if you find the plate is available, get it direct from DVLA.

Reg plates sell for how much the buyer is prepared to pay.
if you want to spend thousands to boost your ego thats fine, there are so many “personal” plates around nowadays, unless its really exceptional, I dont think any really body notices, And if they do its not going to generate any revenue, only for the dvla.Peter

i have a few A1 51GNS on my car, A1SOS on the van and some on retention S1GN L (SIGN 1) and E5SBX (ESSEX). I buy them now and again when i spot a good one….

is £1700 way out the park to pay initialy for a plate on the hope its of some value?
ide say the one i am looking at has probably more relavance to a bigger audience than the sign trade but there is obviously value in yours.

That’s exactly the ploy John pulled on me! He bought T11 LSA for our 6 year old daughter Ailsa, told me that at £250 it was a bargain. Had to point out to him that it may seem a bargain now, but that as soon as she turns 17, she will be looking for a car to put it on!

Sorry but have to disagree….
Plates do attract attention and they don’t need to be exceptional to be noticed.
Mine will relate to my business and generate more recognition of the business name, which can’t be a bad thing.Cheers

i agree peter, but… unless something is proven to work feel comfortable. had money caught up in an isa for some time, never really went anywhere… lost money on endowment, you name it… banks etc dont always get it right specially these days. everything is a gamble. even the bloody pention schemes are glorified isa’s. what will happen when i retire, big sum or another c0ck-up by the banks? all a gamble…
i want to buy a plate as i never have, but sticking a bit more down on one that may bring back money in years to come isnt bad….ok, just checked my plate 2 minutes ago… another one from the plates family has been bought, sits now at £1880 ao its went up £180 in under a week… 🙄

Probably agree some are a bit of a waste of money, but if you get one that people will remember or relates to your business, then I think they’re worth it.
Phil and Adrian both have great plates related to their business, and although they probably don’t get direct business from the plates, I bet the customers remember them.
Windowfilms have a fantastic set of plates….I’d smile and remember them if I saw them on their vans advertising tinting.

Goodness me, I cant even tell you what my number plate is, much less somebody else’s. But I can spot and identify a good vehicle livery at 3/4 of a mile. I think this is a bit like ironing your underpants. Have noticed the girls are not really interested in this topic either….what does that say?……….. boys and their toys! 🙄 🙄 🙄 lol
