Do any of you people out there in sign land use a pda in the everyday running of your sign business.

I don’t know much about them but they seem to be merging a lot of technologies into one neat unit and I was wondering if they would be useful.

At the moment there are two of us working in our business, each of us has a notebook/diary/addressbook type thing where we keep all the information comming into our business everyday. Things like contact info, job decriptions, measurments etc.

The problem is that we don’t have a central place where all this information is stored so if I need a certain piece of information and it’s in Jules’ notebook and she’s out I’m stuck.

So, If we each had a PDA with a camera and wireless connectivity would it be possible to input information once into one unit and have if automaticaly update the other when in range and maybe update to the office PC also.

    Is this possible

    Hi Paul,
this could be done. I haven’t done it yet but what your thinking of is very similar to what we are trying to do. There are PDA’s available with blue tooth, that run Filemaker which we already use that can be sync’ed with a PC and over the net.
So I know it can be done but we’re miles away from doing it. Have a look at some of the PDA magzines, have alook at the Filemaker web site. http://www.filemaker.co.uk to see if there are any ready made solutions .
On another note, well done on the bike ride. I had replied to the thread on the ‘boards offering to sponsor you at 10p a mile so if you send me the amount and an address, I’ll get a cheque off to you.
    Regards,
    John.

Paul, while you was biking it, we have a thread https://www.uksignboards.com/viewtopic.php?p=101834&highlight=pda#101834

In the larger-type companies with lots of staff, they use Microsoft Exchange 2003 which runs Outlook and centralises things like Contacts, Tasks and email, you can also use a PDA to access the server to keep into contact with email/task/outlook etc.

Some web servers online also offer Microsoft Exchange for a monthly fee, gives you all the features and can practically access it from the world.

Camera Photos, tricky one, best let others speak about that.

However, you say about the notebook, what happens if it gets stolen or hard-drive shock? hows your backup, I know loads of people who have had a problem with their data on notebooks.

Another thing, I think you have a funky phone? If you use Outlook, can your phone syncronise with Outlook?

Well done on the bike ride Paul, I’m afraid I cant be any help with all this modern technology as I am a bit of a dinosaur, I’m still using a house brick sized mobile phone which just has a normal ringing sound!!
Dave I could be wrong but I think Paul meant notebook as in a pad of paper you draw/write in!!

    Yep, your right there Martin

We are at present using a paper based system which is ok but as we are getting busier information is getting lost and people are getting forgotten so I want to syncronize all the important daily information so everyone has it and it is backed up on all machines so if one of the PDAs is stolen or lost it is not the end of the world.

    Thats a long sentance 😳

Dave, I will read that post with a cuppa in a minute

    Cheers

Ok, my advise the Paul, if you have Microsoft Office installed, load up Outlook, look over it and try adding a few contacts and have a look at the diary feature on a it. If it fits in with your workstyle, you might then consider some of the more mobile technologies that are out there.
p.s. Microsoft Outlook Express is not Microsoft Outlook
