    Hi Glenn

They are just pre-set output variations.

Distribution will output as RGS plus compression etc.
    Editing keeps the file native.
Pre-press Outputs as CMYK with a bleed.

All the settings can be altered and you can save your own preferences ie I often use for prepress but have convert text to curves set.
Incidentally for those who prefer to print to pdf using Acrobat or Cute/similar under the postscript tab in the print dialogue box click OFF download type 1 fonts and convert TT to Type1 this will automatically convert to curves when you print

Thanks for the replies Tim and Alan

    I’m still a little bit unsure though…

I’ve always exported to the rip as EPS in past but some of the file sizes are horrendous

Is one of the presets setup for exporting straight to the rip (Document Distribution for example) or is it a case of tweaking any of the presets to suite requirements?

I always use Pre-Press with fonts to curves or print to CutePDF if I need imposition when I send pdf out to others. If you print to PDF or similar basically it is similar to eps export in as much it goes through a postscript – pdf trip, transparencies or a fountain fill gets broken up into loads of bitmaps and you would notice that if you imported back into Draw. Publishing to pdf is a bit different. A published pdf which had a fountain fill usually imports back into Draw as a fountain.
For large format output I always design in CMYK (don’t mix colour models) I have colour management set (I use Euroscale coated/uncoated V2) RGB is Adobe RGB 1998. I use a Huey for the monitor but if you have your monitor profile use that.
X5 uses the OS system for monitor so you set it in Windows, X4 set in CM page.
If the colour management is set right and you use prepress or similar settings for the pdf publish you should get printed closely what you see on screen or at least a very good starting point.

I transfer to my printer with a mix of edited and pre-press, the Native option in the last dialog is a must
