  • Partial Wrap on family vehicle, questions and advice?

Posted by Darrell Wootton on October 1, 2019 at 1:31 pm

    Hi,

Considering having a partial wrap done on a family vehicle but I know nothing about vehicle wrapping. (gloss white – top half of vehicle).

This is for our personal pride and joy that we probably will be keeping for 5-10+ years, so looking for guidance:

    1. What material for longevity and durablity would you consider if you had to do yours?
    2. Do plain gloss white wraps need some kind of protective film?
    3. Other things to consider?

Personally I wont go anywhere near this job but when making enquries for someone else to do, it helps for me to have a bit of background knowledge.

I stock and use Metamark 7, but as mentioned looking for advice on materials, longevity and other things to watch out for when getting quotes.

    Thanks in advance

To begin with, look towards a cast colour change wrapping film.

There are many others, not all cast, not all good, not all easy to apply or work with…
When it comes to wrapping, Buying cheap material is often a false economy for multiple reasons.

They do not need protective films as such. But you should look towards aftercare kits for keeping it looking good and preventing grime build-up etc. For instance, Oracal has an aftercare kit, I know the others have similar, but not sure a complete kit as such, I could be wrong on that.

You also have to consider the ease of removal when you decide to trade it in or whatever. The benefit of a good wrapping film is that it will remove clean, quick and easily! Leaving pristine paintwork behind. This means the residual value has increased, which many miss when selling cars on. if it is wrapped properly by a good installer, you have protected the paintwork.

Thanks for the advice Rob, i will bear in mind the vinyls that you have mentioned and the aftercare kit.

I have spoken to Roland DG to see if they have any recommended or experienced wrapping companies around Yorkshire area who could do the job if we decided to proceed, I don’t want to give it to someone who is new to wrapping or an inexperienced fitter.

Its a new vehicle, so from what I have read in other posts I may have to leave it a few weeks to let any paintwork outgas.

How long should it take to do a half wrap (ie: top half of doors and above, door handles, roof, half tailgate etc) in single plain white gloss on VW T6 transporter type of vehicle.

You won’t need to outgas new factory paint, between it being manufactured and you buying it, several months have probably passed so the paint will be as good as it will ever be. Only on newly painted (resprayed) vehicles do we wait for the paint to fully harden.

My guess is a one man band would want the van for two days, a firm with more people on it just a day.
