  • Paper posters (billboard pasted type) not sticking aluminium

    Hi All,

Just wondered if anyone has ever had any experience of billboard style signs and the paper posters that are put up by a bloke on a ladder with a bucket of adhesive.

We’ve supplied a large 16 sheet aluminium sign (mill finish face, panel and posts from ashby) but the posters won’t stick and seem to be falling off after about 2 weeks.

The posters are supplied by the people who specialise in this sort of thing and their fitters.

Our client now wants to know why the posters wont stay on the ali?

I have spoken to the poster pasting people, and they say that these billboards are usually clad in galvanised sheets, but will it really make that much of a difference between ali-faced and galvanised???

Anyone got any experience of this type of thing???

    Cheers
    Joe

Joe absolutely no experience of sticking posters or anything else to bill boards but I can tell you from experience machining aluminium that it’s difficult to get anything to stick to it. Don’t know the reasons, may have something to do with the oxidation process of aluminium or just simply down to the surface finish.

To late to get it treated now so might be best to at least give it a coat of primer, just bare in mind that not any old primer will stick to mill finish aluminium either so you will need one suitable.

I would try a small section to test it but even if it works my concern would be how does the guy up the ladder remove the old ad before applying a new one as the primer could be scrapped off.
Would have thought Ashby would have known about this & warned you mill finish was not the best way to go for this sort of application.

Sorry Joe, not sure I can help with your problem either but round here they don’t remove the old, just paste over the top!
Occasionally you’ll see one where it gets too wet and the weight of the mass of paper pulls it off the backing sheets but wouldn’t like to say if they were aluminum or steel?
My only experience is with powder coated panels for churches where the posters stick OK so maybe paint?

How about matt vinyl? I’ve never done it and I don’t know how it would stand up to changes, but maybe the cheapest solution.
