    Hi all,

What would be a reasonable expectation of the durability of gloss painted 19mm foamex lettering fitted to a shop front?

I have a customer asking & not sure what to tell them.

I have fitted lettering which has been up for 2-3 years & still looks as good as new, but having just looked on a few sign makers websites, & noticed generally they seem to only give an expected outdoor durability of about 12 months.

Surely as Foamex is a relatively waterproof material & if then given a good spraying with gloss paint I would think it could possibly last 6, 8, maybe even 10 years.

Has anyone done any lettering like this that’s still looking good after that sort of time span?

    Regards
    Myles

As long as the prep is done right (key the bejayus out of it 😀 I use scotch pads that you get in motor factors.) and you use u/c and a couple of top coats it will last as long as paint on timber Myles,
I have painted full sheets and letters and never had probs. Allow plenty of time for it to properly cure before installing though.

    hope that helps.

I have had 10mm vinyl faced cut out letters on a unit I did 10 years ago,
    still good,

    Thanks Harry,

I actually outsource them from Cutting Edge usually & they always do a cracking job of them, so I reckon they’d be good for a good few years.

Just finished a load of these, bit of a pain but as follows, first clean with IPA, then key with red scotch pads, plastic prime and 2k primer to seal the edges and then 2k base coat followed by 2k clear coat.

HMG do a primerless paint designed for foamex. Just key & go. Comes in all RAL colours etc. A year or so on, & it still looks fine.
