I done 2 of these Atego 26ft Curtain Siders over christmas. It took 2 of us 5 days to do both.
Everything on the curtain was cut in Mac Mask. The white & yellow stripe was coach painted with a brush, the text was rollered. I used Apollo Inks and Mactac 9800 series for the cab & rear.

in PA. Took me actually seeing one in Scotland
to figger out what they were!
I am sure that they are not fun to do.
    But ya did good.

    Great looking jobs Wardie.

I noticed you spent approximately 5 days to do both. You should seriously consider using APA tape Truck Vinyl. Looking closely at your job, i`d be looking at having 2 guys from production to completion in approx 12 hours (a day and a half). No mess, no fumes and 1 application.

I`m eternally gratefully to this board and it`s members for educating me on Truck Vinyl.

mmmmm lets see. Custom expressed he didnt want Vinyl, so that rules that out & i would always go the paint route on curtains as vinyl looks naff after a year or so.

Hi wardie great work mate. Well done..
I do this type of stuff now and again. We did it pretty often a while back but felt that unless you’re making great money. They can be more hassle than they are worth.
I think if you are doing this workday in day out using ink, you could probably rattle this stuff out at low cost, making descent money. Ink goes a long way after all. Learning how to apply it 100% every time is a different story. With this in mind you have done exceptionally well.
My own opinion, I think if you only dabble in it now and again its safer to go for truck vinyl.
If I was doing the truck you have shown I would have inked the curtain for the large white panel & a solid white oval. But I would do the rest in truck vinyl overlaying the oval with red with the letters weeded from it.
The bleeding of inks and multiple outlines etc can be an awful nightmare at times.
“Inking curtains does stand up to the daily abuse better than any vinyl”, but in fairness. If the vinyl is applied correctly, It can stand the test of time just as good.
like all vinyl, I have heard horror stories about truck vinyl, I honestly put it down to the way it is applied or the type of vinyl used.. I don’t really think vinyl is best if your doing huge solid areas, but I think with text and logos it works very well.. It is cleaner, faster & healthier at the end of the day.
I know Norman from NTC uses ink all the time. I know others too, including myself on occasions. I think it’s down to self-preference & ability.
You mention that your customer did “not” want vinyl. I have been told this in the past by one or two of my own customers. My guess is they have probably been stung with it in the past. But you have to consider.. The sign company may have used banner vinyl? They may have applied it wet? (not avery) They may have used a cast or calander vinyl (oh yes, I have heard of that one too 😮 ) they may not have been cutout to fit this vinyl in the first place?

    The list goes on..

Yeah its a real pain to paint…..
The curtains are on the Truck, so i have to work off steps and a plank. My machine only cuts 550mm wide (CX24). So the Stripes are cut out at 3m lengths @ 6 per side, 3 top, 3 bottom. Then the White ovel is in 2 parts over laid and cut into the stripe. Then the yellow text is appiled. Now i have to mask the whole curtain with brown 36″ paper to stop drips/splats on the cutain. Then we can paint the white and yellow. All that takes 1 whole day.Next day i fit the red text and over lay the red oval again in two parts. Then those can be painted. While this is being done, i then start the 2nd truck. So to get both painted takes four days, the 5th and final day is for the vinyl on the cabs and rears and touching up the cutains.
I must say these curtains look the dogs bits even close up….I was working for 2 clients on this job, one was the Merc dealer who i do work for and second was Verran Freight who i also do work for.So these had to be spot on…. 😉
