    Hi all,

Just had to do a van graphic job today which required chrome vinyl, and the customer wanted it to last several years.
I hate using the stuff anyway, but the customers king so I got some 5yr stuff in from Metamark which wasn’t cheap at £16p.m. at 610mm.
Anyway it was horid to work with – and cut on the plotter. I found it delaminated from the glue really easy and if you heat it (even a little) it looks like the face of the film kind of bubbles up.
I have to do some more of these on hgv’s next year but dont want to use the same stuff again. Anyone had any experience of another make which will do the job better ?

hmmm i hate the stuff myself mate.. i dont trust it!
5yrs? well i know most offer 2 years or less.. so 5yrs?…thats not bad. £16 a metre isnt though 😕 most suppliers. not all, will just get blank reared vinyl in and sell it as their own. hense the extreme costs.

i heard from jon aston (spandex canada) that the 5 yrs stuff is actualy spandex material..
BUT! on checking it was £50+ a metre????

do a search for mirrored vinyl or someting like that.. theres a long thread on this materail. a good one im sure..
the best way i know of extending the life of mirror vinyl is to apply ontop of normal vinyl.. i does work.. gaurantee it 😉

    Rob,

thanks for the info, i will check that out. You’re right about the Spandex stuff which is 3M, I looked at that (for a second or two) till I saw the cost was as you said !

Thats interesting about applying over std vinyl – this job fortunatly requires the chrome overlayed on it so with a bit of luck it will last !

Nigel I’ve had a bit (one word) of mirror silver on my van for about 4 years, it is overlayed on other vinyl but apart from being scratched its still stuck like the proverbial **** to a blanket. 🙂

Orafol claim 2years external and comes in at around £150.00 per 50 meters @ 610 mm

I’m trying APA’s at the moment although it does not seem to have the same tac as the Orafol, they do claim 4 years.

What I’ve found with the APA stuff is that is does seem to be more conformable than the Orafol. And at £1.76 per meter @ 610 mm seems like a bargin.

you could apply it onto vinyl then cover in clear vinyl to protect.. thats if you havent tons to do of course. it would cost more obviosly but gotta be cheaper than the spandex stuff 😮 😉

i am a present using APA silver whilst removing one’s cock up as we do
it does appear to have its own clear cover and i looked at a van i did 6 months ago and all looks well but i could only use it on flat pannels even riding round the door jam was a problem £ 4 £ OK
can you print on to it with the EX or VERRSA cos the pc60 wont and i can not find a mirror silver that will it used to years ago

YES THATS RIGHT I USED TO USE THE ALLPRINT STUFF BUT I CANT REMEMBER WHOT TRIGERED THE PROBLEM I THINK IT WAS UPGRADING ? THE FIRMWEAR SINCE TRYIED SEVERAL MAKES SAME RESULT ALL OTHER PC60 WORK FINE SO PRESUMED THE MANIFACTURES CHANGED SOME THING ON THE SERFACE TO MAKE IT MORE DURABLE ?? THIS IS A PROBLEM COS I DO QUITE A FEW DOME BADGES & TRICK IT BY LAMINATING WITH CLEAR BEFORE PRINTING
BUT THIS IS EXTRA WORK ANY OTHER IDEAS WELCOME

I know its probably not too appealing, but I use the 3M 7755 chrome film on my edge which prints really nice. The trouble is it’s got another one of those legendary 3M price tags at £29p.m. for 380mm !!!
I tried some Avery double sided silver which dosn’t appear to have any lamination but it was a dead loss, so I don’t know what else to suggest.

    Happy Christmas all,

    Nigel
