  • Out of hours installations

Had a heated debate today with a trade customer today. Just want to check my sanity.

We quoted on two vans back in August, got the job only yo be told they must be installed on a weekend. As we’d quoted a price and it was a good customer I made my displeasure known and did the job.

Well now two more to do for the same customer, knowing it needs to be installed on an evening (not a weekend again!) I added a small surcharge (£35.00) to each van.

Customer has hit the roof and didn’t appreciate my response of "Try and find another company who will install on an evening, for that price!"

End of the day, our business our pricing model, I’m just venting as it felt like I was being made to feel guilty for upping the price and they were trying to force us to lower it. I didn’t and won’t be!

We dont normally work at weekends either, so if there is a job that can "only" be done at the weekend, we have to pay Saturday overtime wages, so we increase the price accordingly + a little extra. After doing this, you will find out soon enough if your customer really can only get it done at the weekend or if they say "eeerrr well i could probably get it to you one day during the week"

I get it all the time – requests to do vans out of hours.

My attitude is how do you get them serviced or MOT’d? Do they expect all garages to work weekends and evenings only?

Of course you should charge extra – it’s called overtime. Your "Trade" customer is taking the pi55

We have had the same kind of thing in the past, all of our quotations now have the following on them:

This quotation assumes installation during our normal office hours. Evening and weekend installation can be arranged, please request a quotation if required.

I’m a strange one though, I quite like doing out of hours work as you can just get on with it without being interrupted, although would never tell a client that.

We get it all the time with wagons, they are out all week working so only available at weekends.
My opinion is they need the wagon to make money so they can pay the extra to have it done at weekends. the same goes for vans etc, if they need the van to make money during the day then they can expect to pay extra for you to do it fit at a time that lets them keep their business running smoothly.
