Opening PDF files without fonts

Warren,

Thought you should be able to see PDf with fonts, even if you dont have those fonts loaded.

You wont be able to edit the PDf though and re-save – at least as far as I am aware (well I say that – but think in Acrobat Pro you may be able to do minor text editing but think you need to have the fonts loaded.)

You can convert the fonts to curves and re-save and manipulate in illustrator, say, if you have acrobat pro – with a workaround. Think Jason X did an explanation. Have done it myself on occasions.

If you dont have the fonts you can use the place
command in illy then flaten the object with vectors set at 100%
The fonts will obviously be curves,

or Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Peter you have to place it first and if you don’t have the font it substitutes it, then when you flatten as curves it does it to the new substituted font.

The only way I know is converting the PDF to a JPG or TIFF then sorting the fonts out separately, if you don’t have the correct font then it will substitute no matter what you do.

im sure someone posted a keyboard short cut a while back which brought up font info in PDFs which id saved the post but maybe someone knows

this helps coz at leaset youd know if youve got the fonts or need to find them before importing into other software

Hi Warren,

What app are you loading the file into?

In Acrobat you can export the file as a PS file. Then if your importing it in CorelDraw then when it asks to import as curves of fonts, select curves. This should then make all the fonts into curves.

I’m using Illustrator, the annoying thing as well is I have acrobat pro but it won’t accept my serial number so can’t use 😕

I’ve now managed to sort all the fonts but wasted 5 hours on it and I have to print and lam 12 A1 posters today 🙄

Pigment printer so no problems laminating an hour or so after printing.

I’ll get in touch with Adobe when I find a few minutes :lol1:

pdf pdf pdf!!!!! who says it’s the way forward!!
used to have this problem all the time. You need Acrobat Pro plus other additional software like Enfocus Pitstop to edit pdf’s properly in Acrobat.

When you Open in Illustrator check which fonts are missing …individually selecting the text area. If the designer has left a stray text point acrobat will always display this message. Use a similar font as an exchange for the missing font? If you cannot solve the font issue you have only one choice.
Open the pdf directly in Photoshop…as you open it asks for file size and dpi..
from there on in it’s easy peasy..unless the customer wants an amend made to the file

Sometimes u find that customer has converted to curves but a stray text forces the matching problem… (as already said)

Sometimes, sod it and print/RIP the PDF and it will be fine and make any changes u can at RIP level (thats if u can)

Just use signlab to open pdf’s it brings in the fonts as curves, no substition probs
