This is a problem to me sometimes Martin. I don’t know of any way around it other than to open the files with Quark.

Usually, if I ask, the client can get their agency to do a different format. Otherwise I have to get one of my clients to open them for me and save them as Illustrator.

Sorry I can’t be of more help.

Hey Martin, We’ve got Quark here Jenny ( the better half) is a graphic designer, and of course needs it. If you need a file converted, email me and We’ll do it for you.

Nah Gray I’m a PC man. Although I’d love to have a mac as well as I’m greedy like that.

Phil, No worries mate. I agree with you. My wife is one of those rare breed of designers, she doesn’t think the sun shines out of her bum, and is always willing to learn new stuff. In fact she puts down her designs a lot of the time but her customers love her work. Of course I’m her number one fan. It’s from watching her working on a business card for me that I discovered this industry and got the spark to learn.

She’s often quite blown away with the designs found here I find it great to have her as a reference for my stuff, and with her skills, it’s easy to incorporate business cards and printing for my customers.

Anyway Martin, I’m still waiting on that file…

It’s not easy to convert Quark files to other formats, you really need a copy of Quark for best results (about £700!!). Adobe Indesign claims to open Quark files (up to version 4 I think) and is a lot cheaper but conversion can be hit and miss.
If your client will export them from Quark as EPS you can often open them in Illustrator (tho they’ll still need tidying up) otherwise convert to PDF which may or may not be of use.

I have both Quark and InDesign. You can open quark files with InDesign and as far as i know its the only package that can open them, but as mike said you can and do quite often loose the formatting (always get the customer to provide you with a hard copy for reference).

Converting from quark to eps is also a solution (needs to be done in quark) but again you do loose some of the formatting and also fonts used can change so again get a hard copy for ref.

A personal opinion now, quark is a good program for destktop/page layout etc.. but at quarks rising time it was the only program available and so became the industry standard, in my personal opinion, if you were thinking of buying this type of program, i’d reccomend InDesign it much easier to work with, those who use photo shop and illustrator will find it very easy to use, all the programs work together and exporting to pdf for proofs is such a breeze compaired to quark. You can also buy very good 4 sets of adobe products (4 programs) for less than the cost of quark!
