When we we began to move away from Solvent printing onto UV roll printing, then UV flatbed, we switched to ONYX and have done so for many years now, so much so that we still have an ONYX 11 which allows us to run multiple Latex printers from a single printer operating terminal.
That said, we also have ONYX Go which is the current online pay monthly version. However, as much as ONYX Go is a better version of the software, we have found it glitchy, from time to time. And on a few instances, we have just reverted back to ONYX 11 because Go has crashed and we have been in a rush to get work out.
However, last week we had a niggle with the actual “computer” and needed to reinstall the software, but we don’t appear to have the installation software. So we emailed ONYX with photos of the Dongle, serial numbers blah blah and asked if we could have a link to download the software.

ONYX replied saying to check the dongle as it may also contain the software, BUT… if it doesn’t, then we MUST upgrade to the current version as they no longer support ONYX 11.

Now, “I get it” if you are running an old machine, old parts will no longer be stocked, or old machines no longer serviced, ink type changes etc…. Just like an old car.
But a bit of Software, a File, a download… something that would occupy nothing more than a bit of memory space!
Fair enough if the ONYX 11 was no longer compatible with Windows or Mac operating systems, but the fact is, in my opinion, it is great and does what we need. But more so, it is more stable than their online version ONYX Go or I wouldn’t have to keep reverting back to our bought and paid for ONXY 11, as our backup.

I really dislike being forced to do things for no reason other than the supplier wanting more money out of us. I like to think about things like this from both sides of the fence, but in this instance, I can’t see their argument other than they want more money on an upgrade or they want to progressively push everyone onto the pay monthly online versions.

    rant over. 🤨

    Hi Rob,

Is it Onyx Thrive, or one of the other versions?

If someone has (I may) the downloaded files on their rip pc, then could they send them to you?

I do agree about the feeling of being ripped off though, it annoyed me that when I bought my new latex I got what I presume was the latest onyx postershop rip, within a few months I was being prompted to check for updates, an update for Postershop 12 was there and I downloaded but, it weouldn’t let me install based on “whatever”, you’d think any upgrades in versions would be free within 12 months!

I’ll be sure to back up my copies of the oporating files / drivers.

I don’t mind doing corel on a subscription (annual) but with the cost of onyx being quite a significant outlay, I don’t want to be spending on that every money / annually etc.

Sorry for the slow reply Jamie, Hugh, it was a long holiday weekend here and just playing catchup now.

I wasn’t working at the office today so I will need to check how they got on this, tomorrow.

There is a possibility the software will be on the Dongle, which if it is, then great, problem solved.

My gripe here is that I fully appreciate software can become incompatible with certain operating systems or it starts to underperform or whatever… I get it.

But, “nothing” is wrong, the software gets used daily.
The supplier, in my eyes, is simply telling its customer “We are not giving you the link to the original download. But we will sell you an upgrade” That, to me stinks!

What makes it worse, is we upgraded and switched to their online software “ONYX Go” several years ago. But on multiple occasions, we have had to revert back to ONYX 11 to get jobs done due to glitches with the online ONYX Go.

    • I think ONYX Go is £50 a month
    • Going back a bit, but I think ONYX 11 was about £2000
    • We use Adobe CS and Stock, which are both on subscription.
    • We have 5 full Print and Cut Signlabs, all the very latest versions of the software.

Anyway, I know i am ranting. so I will shut up now until I get an update on the situation with it. 🤔🤣

I do have an installer for Onyx 11 Thrive, if it’s any use, or Onyx 10.2.

Thanks for the offer Jamie, that’s really good of you mate.
I think if I installed ONYX 10.2 it will probably only work if I install the patches up to 11, bringing me back to the same software download problem. I think I will just ask ONYX if this will work, if it will I’ll email you, mate. 👍

I have some older versions as we are on XP, message me or I will..

Thrive is actually wonderful but will take on your notes about Go. Interesting as we just changing thnigs about now.

We also hit a wall with installing Old Thrive on new O/S hence why we not got too much further.

A software developer normally keeps their last 2-3 versions live allowing a customer to Roll back, Adobe is one as u can isntall the old kit.

    Hi Dave

There isn’t anything up with our ONYX 11, and we are running an up-to-date Windows operating system.
There is a niggle with the actual computer and before we wipe it and reinstall, we want to make sure we have the ONXY 11 software. We do have the dongle etc. just the software installer that is missing.

Whilst we are sorting this out, we are running the printers from ONYX Go, on another computer.

ONYX 11 is pretty much our backup software should issues arise with ONYX Go, and it has done multiple times in the past.
So I like to be able to fall back on ONYX 11.
If ONYX Go was super stable, “which it should be”, there shouldn’t be a need for me to have ONYX 11 as my backup, but in our experience over the past couple of years, it is temperamental and that doesn’t sit well with me when trying to run a business.
So when I try asking ONYX for a little bit of support in providing a download link and they deny me that, it does bug me!
For the record, i have zero issues with them even saying, yeah we will provide it on a USB for £50, or even a download at the same price. but to simply say, no. 🤨

crap Rob, why didn’t you post this a month ago… I had a disk, think it got ‘tidied’, will have a look around again!

And yes, Onyx seemed to have removed a ton of legacy downloads from there website sadly, like everyone else, they push the latest product – which is how they make there money.

Just don’t start me about Onyx Align price……
