Got a customer requiring the above for glazing at a gate house, normally would go with a window film, R Silver 20 or a low VLT dual reflective but the problem, as per usual, is at night the material works in reverse due to it being darker outside than inside the office when all the lights are on as its manned 24hrs.

I was thinking of the mirrored / silver vinyl cut in a venetian blind type way, 10mm vinyl, 5mm gap which would give some degree of privacy.

Anyone done this with any success and what type vinyl, I have used some metalic silver in the past but it was crap to work with, really thin and was a nightmare to weed.

Do you think contravision would be an option?

    Thanks

    Bob

Contravision is an option, although i would only generally use it if you are printing to it, it can look a bit tacky over time without print and when it rains the water forms in the holes so its difficult to see out as its an external application.
I am seeing my window tinting guy i use tomorrow so i will ask him what he thinks, there maybe a different window film you can use which will have the right effect.

We have applied lots of Royal Mail & Local Authority type buildings with the Bomb proof stuff & similar, which is also one way vision mirror. but never known any that achieves "night and day". would be intrested if you do manage to find some.

You will find 4 suppliers of specialist window films on the UKSB Toolbar under UK Suppliers tab.

    Hi Bob

They reckon a ratio of 8:1 difference in light levels is needed.
This can still be achieved at night if spotlights are shone onto the film which are brighter than the lights inside and a Dual reflective film is used with less interior reflection.
Some people install a secondary dark non reflective film inside over the silver.
Someone also suggested Llumar RN-07 as being a good option, which is what llumar call their one-way-mirror film, (although we all know it not) and suggested this works with only a 2;1 ratio.

At the end of the day the horizantal bands in opaque vinyl may be best.

Contravision can be installed inside but will still be awkward to see through out into the dark, unless well lit outside.

    cheers Stu

Thanks for the replies guys, Think you have all just confirmed what I already thought.

Stuart, I have used the Optitiune Film from Hanita before with good effect, especially the low vlt one at 5% and I did mention the spotlights for the exterior.

I have also done as you suggested, install silver 20 and then overlay with a dark film but this in effect is the same as the darker dual reflective stuff.

Regarding the contravision I thought of an internal application but on looking at the sample I have it has a black adhesive and think this may look pants from the outside.

    Thanks again guys

    Bob

Also if you installed the contravision inside then you would be able to see straight in and not out, if im right!! lol

There is a new contravision available where you can print onto the adhesive side. This is available printed through William Smith and would therefore have the black side on the non adhesive side. If left unprinted would have white to the exterior.
But again its really down to light levels which way you see best through it.

Tell them to fit blinds, I know its a strain on their muscles but it will give them something to do at night. 🙄
