I thought some of you may have experience of roller shutters, the garage door, industrial unit type? The sort of thing that may be used for shopfitting also? I need to get some privacy and security at the back of my premises.

I have a driveway with an opening of 11′ a wall height of 7.6″ on one side and a brick pier the other side. I cannot hang gates, no room to open them comfortably, sliding folding doors are expensive (the track alone is £1000!) and so I’m thinking of a roller shutter. Again a traditional roller shutter is expensive and as it will only be used occasionally I wondered if anyone knows whether someone out there sells them second hand or can think of a better way of filling this gap?

The roller would be covered by a small pitched ‘Lych-gate’ style roof. (hot)

    Mate,

you’re on the right track. Most people I know have this type of closing on their garage doors. It’s a shame you’re not here…(in a way) ‘cos these things are easy to get and cheap.

    Good luck Martin

What about an ordinary “up and over” metal garage door. A door and frame of this type are fairly cheap and easy to install.

An up and over door is about right,

I am building a garage with my old man at the moment and it is having a spnking new 10foot door, it is the type that is in sections and runs on a track which goes up and over. the opening is about 6’6″ high and you need about 18″ of headroom above the door to allow the door to finish flush with theopening when closed.

I think these doors with electric motor mech are about £1200.

I have no idea how roller shutter doors compare in price.

Hope it is of help, try Ebay, OOPS sorry getting a bit carried away with ebay at the moment, selling anything that doesnt move.

Thanks chaps. A garage door wouldn’t work, nothing to hold the tracks and it would look unsightly in the raised position hanging there in mid-air.

I’m toying with the idea of making a sort of timber venetian blind! I don’t need cast iron security, more of a screen to stop opportunist passers buy grabbing a handful of T-shirts etc., while I’m in another room.

Paddy. …A roller shutter is about a £1000 which isn’t the earth but set against the fact that I won’t use it very much it’s too much to shell out at this time.
