• Not even half a print

Posted by Bill Dewison on May 14, 2004 at 3:23 pm

This might be something really simple that I’ve overlooked, but its just driving me dotty.

On the PC60 I printed off 100 50mm circular stickers using process black. No problems, job weeded, done and ready to go. So I go to repeat the job, set everything up as it was before, and it prints one line! 😕 Ok I thought, restart computer, switch PC60 on and off, start again. Same thing! 😕

So I grab the manual and scower it, but no mention of this problem. I presumed it was a temporary glitch, so I grabbed another job file, 3 x 150mm vauxhall logo stickers onto mirror film. This time it printed halfway through the job and stopped. No flashing lights, no warnings, just dead stop 🙁 The thing isn’t even finishing the printing, let alone cutting. I’ve checked each cartridge, changed each cartridge, changed the cleaning strip, checked the vinyl again and again and if I restart my PC on more time I think the power button may have a hissy fit 😉

I figure so far I’ve wasted a few metres of vinyl and a couple of ribbons, but I’m at a loss to what is going wrong. Is it something simple that I’m not doing? Printing/cutting from CorelDRAW 9, usual setup.

Yes. The cartridge stays on, but the printing stops and won’t restart.

when it stops does it make a sorta racket? sounds daft but sometimes if you havent loaded a ribbon onto the posrt properly it struggles to lift and will just stop.
try making sure all ribbons ar tight wound and on the holding bays square/proper.

to be honest your discription doesnt sound like this.. but ill speak to andrew and ask if he knows.

one other thing, check the label/barcode thingy 😕 check its on properly as it may not be identifying the cartridge.

for the sake of it change all the cartridges, shut down, reboot all and try again.

let me know how you get on mate… 😉

Thats exactly what I’ve done Robert, I changed all the cartridges, shut down the power to both the PC60 and the computer, restarted, and it still did it. I checked the diddy sticker things, and that they were secure in the head 😕

Its so bizarre though, it printed a few hours earlier with no problems, well I say no problems, a magenta ribbon snapped on me, but it was so close to the end of the cart, I didn’t bother, just put a new one in.

Very strange though, I now have a few metres with a bit of print here, a bit of print there… anyone want to buy some modern art? 😆 😆

IF IT STOPS DEAD ANYWHERE POWER LEAD ? BECAUSE IT IS ON A STAND THERE IS SOME STRAIN ON THE LEAD CONNECTION
THERE IS A HEAD TEMP CUTOUT DURING HEAVY PRINTING MIGHT COME IN BUT NORMALLY 20 SEC BEFORE IT CONTINUES TO PRINT
IF IT STOPS WITH THE HEAD PARKED ON THE RIGHT THEN IT HAS NOT GOT THE INFORMATION TO CARRY ON PRINTER LEAD – COMPUTER

Unplug it when you shut it down and leave it for a while. and if its only printing half I would guess that its to do with post script memory or something like that just an educated guess.

But I would definitly un plug it seen some strange things similar before and that has cured it with me not on a roland though other computer stuff.

    Update 😀 Chris, you are a star!!!! 😀 😀 😀

Dodgy parallel cable, replaced it, and its now running perfectly 😀 Completed all the jobs in record time as well, so its probably been on the way out for a while 😕 My own fault though, I forced it into the connection port on the back of the PC as it was a tight fit, so I’ve probably damaged it myself 🙁 That’ll be a lesson to me, brute force isn’t a good idea when it comes to cables 😳 😳 😳

Thank you to everyone for the help though, just panicked (yet again 😳 ) thinking that I hadn’t cleaned it properly and broke the thing 😳 😳 The trials of having a new machine though, I guess it’ll get easier as I get more experienced with it.

    Cheers, Dewi

    😆 sorry chris…
well this is a hell of a long story.. (ill try to cut it short. 😆 )

we decided to take on a 4th unit in our industrial estate to accomodate the grenedeir, laminator and banner making fascilities we purchased also at the sign show because of the size and space needed for them. easy enough we thought but… the council we rent the units from wanted to tie us to a new lease which we were not prepaired to do because for the last two years we have been trying to buy land or units to develop the business from. anyway.. nonly in the last few days have we eventualy come to an agreement & we get can now get under way. this should take only a few weeks and then we can call B&P to deliver.
i have to say B&P have been very patiant with us and have held our machines since the show. we actualy have everything in our posetion other than the grenadeir and laminator.. the, banner welding machine, eyelet machine.. banner material, ink cartridges, new tables timber etc etc.. you name it its all just about to be put in place.
we have orders coming in daily now so we are very eager to get the ball rolling..
im going to take many pictures of our process and of the new work we are about to do and post it on the site as a sort of step by step demo for those thinking of doing the same thing.

fingers crossed everything goes to plan. 😉

Well you certainly bit the bullet there then.
i would like the unit next door aswell but cant bring myself to want to pay the rates – rents ok just the rates. you have obviously done your homework ref work availability

    Best of luck

    Thanks Chris
We HOPE we are doing the right thing… 😆 😉

Seriously though.. We looked at ways to put more work out the door. The obvious answer was more staff. But we have had some much bother with staff over the years that we decided against it and opted for machines to speed up production and ultimately improve the product we put out.
We do already have a very good selection of customers this machine will accommodate in speeding up their orders & improving the quality of the work. Anything else is a bonus from here & a bonus I “now” think that will pay off many times over for use. purchasing the grenadier has opened many more doors for us as far as output goes.

    Fingers crossed

The mirror is from Europoint Chris. I got quite a good deal on a smallish roll, so I thought I’d try it out 😀 Its very, and I mean very, thin and the backing paper is unrulered (making it much harder to get a straight cut) but I’ve found it to be really smart stuff.

The PC60 prints onto it no problem at all, and the print quality is comparible to the print on Oracal 751/651. The Vauxhall stickers look fantastic now they’re weeded, just need to either overlaminate or frog juice as they’re going on the back quarter panel on a Vauxhall car. I have an order in for a BMW 318 in the same style, an Alfa 155? (forget the number but its a V6, spent all my time listening to it) and I’m hoping the ones I put in the shop will sell reasonably well also. I’ve also made up some smallish ones in the same style, just to fill up the gap at the end of the vinyl, so I may as well pop those in the shop also 😀

Realised today that I really need to buy some spot colours in. CYMK process colours are all very well, but when you last magenta snaps, its not good 😕 Ever get the feeling I’m learning the trials of the PC60 the hard way 😉 I puzzled for a couple of hours before I posted, getting more and more frustrated as I attempted everything to get the machine back on track.

Thank you again though Chris, very much appreciated 😀

    Cheers, Dewi

snapped… well i know it happens mate but can count on my one hand the amount of ribbons ive snapped. as far as i have heard its down to the image being printed at the time. 😕 tiny thin lines etc but cant comment as i really havent had many break.
if it does, just take the two ends of ribbon. tape together and winde on a couple of inches and start again 😉

i know toy probably know this mate, i have grown to learn how fast you teach yourself, which can only be good. 😉 but thought ide mention this for the readers that are new.

Its trying to remember it all Robert 😀 Half the time I keep trying to think what ppl have told me, which is weird when you start trying to stick a cleaning strip to the under side of a cartridge 😮 😮 😳 😳

I would’ve tried to stick it back together but for 3 minor points, 1… no sticky tape, 2… it was almost at the end of the ribbon and 3… no sticky tape 😉 (just thought the sticky tape thing was important 😆 )

As you say though, its always worth posting tips and stuff as you can guarantee one day someone will have the same problem. Hopefully the frustration levels I was experiencing today can be avoided by other newbie PC60 owners now 😀 At one point I got so worked up I crushed my cigarettes, then realised I didn’t have any nicotine relief and got even more frustrated 😆 😆 😆 😆 Silly Dewi!

Bless Dewi!!! Just spotted this post with your pc60 stopping …….. we had exactly the same problem a couple of months after starting up, couldnt think what was wrong ….. kept starting & stopping then finally stopped ….. stressed, had a rush job to get out ……. gave up all hope thinking it was something major ….. But then while Steve leaned on our pc600 while panicking about what to do …… hey presto it started …… the cable was loose and he must have touched it …….. 😆 😆 Wont make the same mistake again though!
