    Hi guys,

We’ve only had our printer for just over a month now. It’s an xc540 Roland print and cut machine and I’m very chuffed with it to tell you the truth.

I’ve noticed that in reading this forum a lot of you guys don’t use genuine inks…Why’s that?

I’ve got 5 years warranty on all parts of my machine if I agree to let the local Roland guy do my servicing and this means that I have to use the genuine ink set.

I have no problem at all with doing this because I can pick up the phone, get to talk with a guy and can download the profiles for third party media I use directly from the Roland website.

I’m not doing an ad for Roland…I’m genuinely interested in why it’s worthwhile for me to change inks. Is the price that different?

I actually scored a good one…I swapped a window tint for the guy who sold me my machine for six 440ml inks worth about $1255 so I’m set for a bit now 😀

Obviously I’ve not been in the printing game for long at all and I’m really new to it (not to the sign trade though) but I wanted to get into your mindset if you use the cheaper inks.

exactly that reason, the expensive heads that need replacing when they mess up.

The JV3 was sold to us with a 1 year waranty included in the price, the additional years are a set fee. I also beleive my supplier competitors do the same thing.

The guy at my suppliers (not the printer shop) told me that the pigment in some after market inks are not as smooth as the genuine ones. Is that true?

Also my heads are included in my 5 year warranty 😀

i heard a similar line from online message boards and from my supplier.
I have also heard that line from 3rd party ink guys too saying theirs is the purest.
Would be great to trace some of the ink manufacturers down, send in Panorama or something.

    Yeah thanks Dave.

What I managed to do before buying my machine was to meet with about 20 different digi print guys before I bought my machine. There were five guys who had no problems with their machines and the rest had heaps of problems. Mainly to do (I think) with having solvent machines converted to other type inks (or was it the other way around?)

Anyway, I got some great info and decided to buy my machine.

I’ve got a close friend who has just bought a machine. He bought a Mimaki JV3 and he hasn’t done even an hour of training at any digiprint course before buying. We made sure we attended every course run by Spandex and Qualsign (two of our suppliers) before even thinking about going down this road.

Jenny and I learnt so much from attending these courses that I reckon that we’ve saved thousands.

we might have bumped into each other then,, I was at the Spandex open day learning about colour management.

The mimaki is what we have… i have managed to find out a lot about it and u find cadet,versacam,jv3 and few mutoh all in the same basket, they are very similar and use the same parts.
