    Hi all,

I am new to both this board and vinyl cutting in general. My self and my brother in law bought one lasy year to “sticker up” our motorbikes, but I’m sort of hooked and would like to expand on this.

We have done our first van, for a motorcycle breaker that we are regular visitors to, which exposed the limitations of a 15″ cutter.

I would like to purchase a second user 24″ cutter, but do not know of the better ones to look out for, or what sort of budget to allocate to it.

Could any of you offer any help, or point me in the right ditrection?

    Thanks

    Gregg (-)

Hi ZXR-750. Welcome to the board. You’ll get plenty of guidance here.

The best advice I can offer you at this time of night is to dump the Kawasaki and get a real bike.

    😀

    Hi John,

My bike is ex-production, and still surprises more modern bikes in spite of her 13 years of age, probably due to having 127bhp 😀

She is currently on my bike table in the garage because she is being rebored to 824cc and having nitrous fitted.

Luckily, I do not have a GB licence 🙄 (Isle of Man) 😉 , so the law can’t take it from me 😎

I had a good look through this board before I joined, and everyone seems really informative, friendly and helpful, which is really nice to see – I hope my contributions can help build on this…

Hi Gregg and welcome to the boards, you have made the right decision in joining us as the boards are full of useful tips and demos. As for a 24″ plotter I’m afraid I cant help with makes as I dont have a lot of experience myself. Try contacting some of the plotter suppliers as most of them seem to have used machines from when someone has traded up to a bigger or newer model. If you buy a second hand machine from a distributor at least you know it will have been serviced and tested before you get it and you may also get some kind of warrenty as well.

    Hi Martin,

Thanks for the info. I figured the best place would be eBay, but apart from the “Stikka” type Roland cutters, my choice on there seems to be limited…

I’ve tried to search on the internet, but all I get back is American based companies selling brand new cutters that are out of my budget.

Having said this, I found this board on a search for a cutter, so it’s not all been pointless so far… 😉

Gregg, try Granthams or Sign Wizard, I think both of these companies do used equipment, both have web sites as well. You could also put a wanted add on here and on boards like e-bay and loot. You could also try contacting roland, graphtec or summa directly, they will probably have a list of distributers that deal with used equipment.

    Cheers Martin,

I have just looked on both sites, but the only hardware they had on offer was between 3 and 5,000, which is out of my pricerange at the moment. I have bookmarked both sites though, and will check them on a daily basis…

Hey Gregg, Welcome… You’ll find lots of helpful info here, just jump on in. If you’ve only got a small cutter, just try to maximise it….Any questions ask.

Gregg you can pick up a brand new 24″ cutter for around £1500. Graphtec, Mutoh, Summa, Roland etc all do models in that price range. You are gonna pay the best part of a grand for a half decent 2nd hand machine, so if you can stretch to it your far better of with a new machine with a decent on site warranty.

Personally I would go for a Graphtec, but I am a little biased 😀

i have 3 roland machines and one graphtec 54″
ide recommend the graphtec.. so ill second brians opinion. and thats not biased.
roland do have great machines but lack in support, in scotland they do anyway.. just my opinion 🙄 😉

oh… almost forgot the reason for this post.. welcome to the site mate.. thanks for submitting your picture too… 😉

    Thanks for the info guys,

Do you think that there would be any advantage to buying something like the HP DesignJet 500 24″ Plotter instead of a straight vinyl cutter? I have found a company in the states that will sell me one for £1,167 plus shipping, which would take it to approx £1,400, which is still £350 cheaper than I could buy it at Dabs for.

I have an idea for a “niche” market, which this would be perfect for, but I need to do quite a bit of background work into my intended market place before I take the plunge. My main concern is over running costs if my “niche market” turns out to be a total non starter. Im just thinking that maybe I would effectively price myself out of the game if running costs for this are too high to just do “normal” work on vans, cars etc…

    What do you think?

As you have probably guessed by now, I am just “dabbling” in this field at the moment. as I am a little scared of diving straight in at the deep end and making it a full time job because of the family and financial commitments I have at the moment. I appear to have the patience, and a little artistic flair, but rock all else – I am extremely short on working experience and knowledge.

My “speciality” appears to be in finding things that people cannot find. If you need something like a logo or whatever, please give me a shout. I have about 30,000 company and sponsorship logos on my HD so far, because I am one of those really sad I.T. contractors who is totally addicted to computers 😉

    My server is running 24/7, ripping away… 😀 😎

    Hey Gregg,
If it is a bit out of the price range…Find someone in the area with a cutter and sub the cutting out… Find out someone from the boards here. Dip the big toe in before taking the plunge.

im not familure with that machine. is it a printer and cutter?
if a printer ide watch for print life.. depending on what your usining it for i guess..
if its bike decals then life im sure would be somthing to consider.

does the machine contour cut the graphic also?
