    Hi everyone,
I stumbled across uksignboards by mistake and am absolutely amazed at what can be done. 😀
I am interested in the design, manufacture and application of vehicle decals. 🙄
As there are no college courses available in my area, It would be nice to find out if there are any books or videos that one could buy to learn more about this fascinating subject.

    regards to all
    Andy

Welcome Andy. I bet there are loads of books available, but I don’t know of any. Someone will be along soon to answer your question. In the meantime, you could read as many posts on here as you can because most topics have been covered in the past. Also, ask as many questions as you like, everyone is very helpful.

hi mate and welcome aboard… ditch the books and get firing questions at us lot.. 😮 :lol1: :lol1: we will answer what we can, and if we cant we will know someone who can 😉 seriously though.. read the back posts on this site, note what you need to know or need to be elaborated on and ask and keep asking…
there are many books on the go.. beautiful sign work etc and many crafts explained, though i feel that the suff your interested in may be out of date. i havent heard of any new uk books etc available…

some suppliers offer demo cd’s on vinyl app but areas are skimmed over and are mostly about promoting their own products.

joe macnamara from this site is a group member, he is also on your doorstep (bristol) and i do know that joe offers tuition. maybe worth giving him a call… 🙄

If you realy want some good books then look at AS handovers web site. there are three books that would help a newbie to the trade.

Vinyl graphics how to by Larry Mitchell….. Sign design and layout by Ken Woodward and if you can only afford one book this has to be it……Mastering Layouts by Mike Stevens this book should be owned by everyone in the trade. find these and others on http://www.handover.co.uk/acatalog/

    Hi Andy and welcome

You’ll get a lotta info on this site if you’re just starting out and even if your experienced

Paul’s right! Handovers do have a wide selection of books on a number of crafts – worth taking a look

Paul: I didn’t realize they had a web-site until your post: Must be new!

    Hi John
Handovers have had a site for a few years now almost since they moved from Angel Yard. I think they must be one of the friendliest companies I have ever done business with, suprising since I got Mike Venus blind drunk at a letterheads meeting about 6 years ago.

    Hi Paul:

I often pop in to see Mike and Derek for supplies

Last visit was able to see (I can’t remember her name) actually putting the sables on the ferrules. The hairs must naturally end and must not be cut. She’s been doing that for 35 years!

Its a tradition that I think will slowly die unless we the traditionalists don’t abandon it altogether for the synthetic era

I’m sure the revival is on its way with so many young ones desiring to learn the old school.

Won’t be able to look at Mike the same way now, Paul
You didn’t spike his drink did ya! 😀

    John 😀

Robert, Tuition is probably the way I should go.
This would be ideal way to learn about which equipment a beginner/hobbyist should purchase and the basics.

I have not come across Joe as of yet, so if anyone knows if he has a web site I would be obliged if they could post the url.

    Andy,
Everything Paul said is right on.
But you can also go to
    http://www.signcraft.com
to buy books and videos online,
    including the Mike Stevens one.
    It’s still in print.
    Good luck.
    Love…..Jill

Hi Andy and welcome to the board. You will find a wealth of infornmation on the internet about signage design and there are also some good magazines out there, a couple have been mentioned on this site! 🙂

I’ve got some links to books etc so I’ll dig them out and come back and post the links. . .
