• New Year new you

For the last couple of years Alison and I have been increasingly dissatisfied with the way we have our unit laid out. Mostly this is historical. We carpeted 2/3rds of the unit when we first moved in leaving only the van livery work space as the standard painted floor. As time went on and new PCs, desks and equipment were added things just got put in the first available space that was usable without having to completely reorganise the entire unit. Consequently as time went on our cutter stood where it was because it had to be next to the PC that drove it. The Cadet printer ended up where it was because that was the only space available (unfortunately carpeted which is not ideal). The carpet itself was now nearly 11 years old and was threadbare in places.

We had long resisted reorganising it all because of all the effort required. Ideally we wanted to lift the carpet but to do this meant moving literally everything!!

Finally when we started back at work after new year we resolved to do something about it all and the two of us went into work yesterday and spent the entire day (and some of today) moving everything, lifting the carpet and cleaning up the painted concrete floor. We then started to reorganise our work space. First we placed the cutter and Cadet printer in their ideal locations and built everything else around that. Desks and computers are now better positioned and we seem to have so much more space than before. Best of all, the old threadbare carpet is now gone!!

So I feel much better now and I am actually looking forward to going into work tomorrow to work in my new revitalised workspace.

    Sad or what ? 😳

Nicola’s right Phill. I did the same thing on New Years Day. I went in and had a chance to re-arrange some things and prepare for the new year. There were no phones ringing and it was quite enjoyable. The resulting week has been super. It was really busy, but it ran smoothly because I was organized. More of the same next week.
Enjoy your "new" shop and have a happy and prosperous new year you two.

nice one phill… when everything is in its place, you feel more comfortable with it because in turn it does the same with the mind apparently. you feel better and are raring to go… well that’s what Audrey enforces on me as shes a "Feng Shui" person… 😕 was funny just yesterday. i heard her telling the guy from SKY when he asked where the toilet was, she said, "could you put the toilet lid down after you?" :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: guy was like… "aye, nae bother missus" 🙄

anyway… not sure if you have replaced any bits where the carpet once was but a good idea is. "were the Cadet is" place a bit of vinyl/cushion floor down from B&Q. it helps reduce dust and static charge. i know you have been in our place and probably seen the section we have. it does make a difference… even if dust gets on it, a damp cloth or moth wipes it perfectly and ready to go. its good to keep a bit extra at the front for the prints to spill out onto if you don’t use the take-up reel.

    Phil,
    funny you should mention that,
Lynn and I took delivery of our jv3 130 just before Christmas, so we needed to re-organize our space.

The printer now lives in what was our bedroom, and we moved into my mums bedroom, as she is spending a few weeks in Portugal

Anyway today we bit the bullet and moved our bed upstairs to our dormer room.
    but what a hassle!
Lynn said 10 years ago it would have taken half the time to do it. (Move the bed that is)
I agreed and added that "not only would it have taken a lot less time, we would have checked out the bed for squeaks!"

    Roll on Thursday…

I’m just about to do the same …………….I bought floor tiles today for the office, the laminate that’s in here is knackered now with the chairs constantly rolling over it, it’s breaking up. So it’s going to be a massive clear out, rip up the laminate and have a going a tiling a floor 😮 . God knows where I’m gonna put the desks, plotter etc etc in the meantime, but I’m sure I’ll work around it for a few days. Left it a bit late I know, should have thought about this last week. But never mind.

well i popped in over the new years weekend, wiring more cat5 around the building for phones and computers… behind the server i have about a tonne of copper wire, well it sorts us out for a while. Also over the last months we converted the main office into one big room and move the reception intio another room and made the best use of the top floor, we got loads of usable space now, also managed to make a few offices as we went. now we just got a leaking roof in an old workshop to sort out, think that might be next years project.

I took on a workshop on the 1st of Jan and moved all my equipment out of the house. I now look at the workshop and wonder, how the hell did I manage to get it all in the house? 😮 Now I keep moving stuff around the workshop trying to work out what works best, while my wife looks through catalogs at new furniture for the empty house :pink: Oh well, we’re both happy, I guess :lol1:

    Take care all

Peter, I take it you live in a bungalow, as these printers way quite a bit, I was wondering how I was going to get the 75 into my workshop never mind the 130!

Hope you are having fun with it, I look forward to joining you soon

We are presently fitting out a new studio and wonder if the
flooring is better in carpet or interlocking rubber matting?

In the past I’ve found the carpet stops the dust and dirt from
getting everywhere, although it can be a pain trying to un-stick
bits of vinyl that fall on the floor.

Would appreciate any advice on best flooring for studio. 😕
