• New Workshed

Posted by John Wilson on April 8, 2007 at 9:10 pm

Just about to order a new work shed for the garden

At the moment I’ve got a few that I keep stock in but they are 8x6ft plastic sheds and in the winter they become damp so could never put any electricals in there 🙁

I want to put my plotter/ printers and my heat press in the new shed.

Few questions for the people that work from a shed

What type of shed do you have? size?

How is yours insulated to stop electrical equipment from becoming damaged with the cold/ wet/ damp?

sorry if these questions are dumb but it’s Easter and I’m suffering from too much chocolate 👿

John, I would start by contacting your local council and finding out what size shed you can have without planning permission, a friend of mine has just built a double garage/workshop in his garden and it is much bigger than I though he would be allowed without any permission from the council but he has done it properly and asked first. I just can’t remember the size he was allowed to build it.

large (ish) timber workshop (not the nasty shiplap type), try and go for 1" tongue and grooved interlocking panels (log cabin style) as they’re so much stronger.

properly waterproofed timbers and felted roof, 1" polystyrene insulation batts with 1/2" foil backed plasterboard over the top,

shed was about a grand, insulation/felt/w’proofer/plasterboard about another £300. worth it though, never gets damp, and a simple electric heater keeps the chill off in the winter,

the only downside…. it won’t be insurable, as i found out after building it,
the upside… no planning required as timber is deemed a temporary structure.

Dont know about Planning in Scotland, but down here the rules as I understand, its not what the building is made of, nor whether it is temporary, its about how far it is from the main building, and if it will be habitated. (by that it means as a home, and used for sleeping in) You can even have a concrete base, and a brick built stucture, as a gazebo or shed, without permission.
But for computers and plotters, and storing materials, A dry (not necessarily warm) environment is essential. Printers do need a bit of heat though

Peter, to be honest I don’t have a clue about regulations myself. All I do know is that a Friend of mine built a brick garage/workshop in his garden and he told me that after speaking with the local council he had been told he could build it to a certain size without any permission but if it were bigger than this size he would need planning permission or a building warrant. (not sure which)

Martin, sorry, you are as usual correct,
I wasn’t trying to state the rules, and anyone building a structure should always check what regulations apply to their circumstances.

Peter, don’t appologise, I didn’t think for one minute you were stating the rules and I am sure others didn’t either. What you say is quite correct, there are a lot of differences, not just between Scotland and other parts of the UK but quite often down to your local council.

I’m sure with a timber structure it can not take up more than 50% of the garden and need to be 2m away from the house.and less than 4m high.

    Lee is on the button,

however with my Local authority they make you have the structure 5m from the house, and the 50% and 4m height. I would check your local council out for rules.

I bought a (studio) shed from Chart stables in Kent. Insulated it myself with jab type and then mdf lined. Managed to keep it quite happily at 19-21 all winter with a couple of electric heaters at not too much pain on the cost.
    Hmmm toasty.

    Cheers

well that’s the guys here with my shed so just watching it being built at the moment, for some reason it doesn’t look the same as when i ordered it but I guess that happens all the time 😕

They say that it will only take an hour or so to put it all together so fingers crossed

John, bet it looked huge when it was empty and now you are wondering how you are going to fit everything in :lol1: :lol1:

It’s funny because looking at the pictures you have posted it looks almost exactly like a house I used to livein, with the woodland at the back, the telegraph pole and the electricity sub station.

do you mean the hut looks like a house you used to live in or the area looks like where you used to live? :lol1:

John, not the same place but as I said from the photos it looks almost the same. I will have to see if I can find any photos of our old house as I am sure you would agree. That was about 20 years ago when I was in the navy and based at Faslane. The house was in Alexandria so not a million miles from Glasgow but far enough.

Nice one john, glad to see your getting things together since the move mate. well done…

on a side note, ide have to cut those over hanging straps of wood off the corners of your shed, as ide be forever banging my head off them on the passing. 😉 :lol1:

Oh it’s pick on Martin time now is it Marcella, whats up is George not giving you enough sport :lol1: :lol1:

To answer you question the area looks almost the same as a house I once lived in but at the moment I would settle for having a shed to live in, in fact at the moment a tent would probably do.
