I’m upscaling the business this year with the purchase of a new printer & laminator. Although I can lay my hands on enough money for new I’m wondering whether I need to purchase brand new or should I buy 2nd hand from a reputable dealer?

    Cheers.

I’m pretty sure most new printers come with 2 years warranty now.

Second hand proberly don’t have any warranty

I can guarantee the printer will breakdown just as you’re about to print 1000,000 stickers.

    New for me

It depends what you need and how far your stretching yourself I suppose.

We bought a second hand versacamm. And it did break straight away. It’s now gone on Roland care. Like Denise says if a machine comes with a 2 year warranty… between the new head and by time I pay for the care package over 2 years I would of saved money buying new. Unfortunately for me the cash wasn’t there at he time.

Next on the list for me is a DTG machine. Not sure which way I will go with that. Second hand your saving almost half the price. But bad luck could strike again. Personally I’ll way up the options and if I can get away with a head having to be replaced and still save a few ££’s I’ll probably go that way.

Read the warranty serval times new or old (if there’s that option) sometimes warranty don’t actually cover very much.

If you can, new is only way to go. With a printer for example, there’s no way of knowing how well a machine was looked after. I bought a second hand cnc about fifteen years ago. Didn’t cost huge money but I got maximum three gears out of it before having to bin it. Bought a new acts at that point and its cost virtually nothing in maintenance in last twelve years.

I’d say it depends what you’re looking at buying. One of the many reasons I bought latex was the cost of consumables, the fact that the heads are consumables – two of each head so only six in there at around £70(?) each, if you buy a low mileage machine then the mechanics should be good and only the consumables to be concerned with – unless you’re unlucky.. my L26500 had done less than 2500mtr at 4yr old, I’ve had it since June 16, done around 1000m of material and have so far replaced one head and half a dozen ink carts only… it’s been great.. touch wood!!

If the business can genuinely afford new and it’s beneficial, go for it. If money is not overly consistent then consider used but buy with your head, not your eyes!

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

I’m feeling that going new on the printer is probably the best call as I’m in this for the long haul and it should pay for itself over a short period.

I think maybe the laminator would be ok as 2nd hand as there is less to go wrong on them. Am I right or wrong on this? ❓
I’m looking for a heated one 1400mm wide. Are there any that you could recommend or more importantly steer clear from?

Laminator is equally as important as the printer and they cost a fraction of the money. Once again I’d recommend new

Flat spots, and imperfections on the rollers will transfer into the print when laminating, and to replace the rollers, you may as well buy a new machine. You can tell anything we’ve printed as there’s an outline of scalpel handle repeated down the edge :blushing:

We’ve always bought new, and keep them for 5+ years. Although we’re in the process of buying a second use epson, only because it’s too cheap to say no to!

Looks like it’s new all round then :yikes:

I really want an application table but figure it’s better to walk before I run. In terms of laminators are there any that stand out from the crowd?

    Application tables are great….

We bought our one from Josero, the service was great.

No hard sale, no massive sales push or anything.

In fact the machine was installed and the company didn’t even ask for payment till two weeks down the line….Now thats relaxed, recommend then highly.

Might be worth you giving Loeic a call at Josero as he is a massive player in the second user machine sector, everything from small roll to roll machines to massive 5m machines. He might be able to put a kit together for you.

I have just brought a brand new roland from JOSERO. Been using their inks for a while and they are only 10miles down the road from me so nice and convenient
