  • New transit magnetics – help please?

Posted by Gordon Smithard on March 29, 2015 at 6:43 pm

I’ve been asked to produce some magnetics for a transit (new shape)
they have to be the same shape as the panels, which is OK on the sides but the rear panels are slightly domed, meaning the mags won’t sit flat.
I showed this to the customer, and he suggested putting a release dart cut into the mag to make it sit flat, obviously this will show but he doesn’t care, he wants it that way.
Has anybody done this? and will it work? My solution was to cut it about 2 inches in from the edge, but he adamant that it’s got to be the same size as the panel.

    Hi
the problem with making mags that size is they won’t remove them weekly as they should, this will lead to rusting behind the mags and eventually them bonding to the panel which they will want to blame you for. As to your question if the dart allows the mag to sit flat then do it but make them sign something that you have no responsibility regarding them coming off and being lost, infact do not fit them to the van just supply them. Search the boards and you will find threads on damage caused by mags

Everything that Kevin has said, also you will have to leave at least a 20mm gap between the 2 pieces that fit on the rear doors and check the depth of the side panels which I think are about 730mm which is greater than the normal width for magnetic sheet – well it is from where I buy it.
Personally I’d politely make an excuse and walk away from the job.

We always supply mags with a care sheet for the customer to follow this state they need to be removed and cleaned regularly to prevent them bonding to the vehicles paint work we also advise them to use a wax on the vehicle to help prevent this especially in the winter with the traffic film, salt and other contaminates that can cause this it save a lot of hassle of the customer saying you did not tell me that…

All the above but also tell him they are almost certainly going to come off at speed sometime and magnetics that size will be no joke for anyone behind him at the time, especially a motorcyclist.

Don’t forget the most important thing… how you going to fit a 1500mm length of magnetic sheet, perfectly in the panel especially by yourself :shake:

We never supply Magnetics that big and we always tell the customer they can’t be cut to shape. If he’s adamant I would tell him to go elsewhere. I wouldn’t get involved.

Agree with all of the above.

Plus, if you cut a triangular dart shape in magnetic it is likely to tear at the narrow part.

Thanks for the replies folks, I’ve now told them I won’t supply any larger than 400mm x 800mm just to be on the safe side.
