New Staff
My son officially leaves school and starts working with me today. 3 Generations working in the business from today. I’m feeling proud, but old at the same time. I remember when he was born, only seems like a week or so ago.
I’ve told him if anything goes wrong at work from now on, its automatically his fault. He’s not sure if I’m serious or not.
I am though 🙂

Rightly proud you should be! I really enjoy my kids working with me (non site of course), there’s something quite satisfying about it 🙂

good for him/you… staff you can trust 100% is difficult to come by. its a quality he will already have without any experience. so yous are already off to a flying start! 😉

It’ll take him a little while to get the right amount of sugar and milk proportion but the balance will come in time

His first day was one of those deep end moments.
All hell broke loose from the very first phone call, with some pretty urgent jobs coming in from some pretty big clients. I regret taking the last week off work to be honest.
He handled himself very well, although he was a bit overawed some times.
I was very impressed that, when I was on the phone trying to negotiate longer time frames with some of the bigger clients with the tighter schedules, Ashley took over the job I was doing and kept the momentum going whilst I was on the phone.
I was able to deflect some design requests his way too, which he produced with very little tweaking required from me.
On top of that, we had plenty of laughs through the day.
I’m very proud of him today, and told the wife that we must have done something right, as two clients have already rung me privately to commend me on the good manners and respectful attitude my new staff member has displayed.

Shane you should not regret it one bit.
my son now 30 has been with me the last 6 years and we have not looked back.i did find that a bit of out side training like a wrapping course or 2 brought better skills in to the business, then he was teaching me.
i like it when a customer walks pass me saying its ok i will speak to the boss.
suits me.

Ashley and I put in a huge day today, we still have to go back and work a bit yet but we have come home to have our evening meal with the wife nd daughter.
Dad and I fly out at 5am to do a job in Sydney, and I’m more than happy to leave ashley look after the fort.
He got his first customer yesterday. He’s proud as punch, and so he should be.
he said to me today that he really didn’t expect it to be so enjoyable working in the family business, but he loves the satisfaction of seeing the end result and a happy customer.
I’ve worked with my dad for 35 years. Never regretted a minute of it, although sometimes it was hard working when your mates were enjoying themselves with school holidays, and the pay wasn’t great, but my dad was very alert to these things and made up or it in other ways, like buying me my first new car.
Dad and I are great mates, and Ashley is seeing that working with family is not as bad as his mates at school led him to believe.
I’ve stressed its about team work and knowing your responsibilities. He seems to have taken that on-board and is enjoying his new role in the family.
I’ve told him if things go to plan, we’ll try and make the UK sign show next year. Thats the hope anyway.

I’m going and taking my son, who will be 16.
(that is, if he stops being surly as he’s been for three weeks)
See, if you do Sign UK in May, you’ll only have to be on vacation till July.

No to knock SignUK, it’s fun and a great way to show your son some modern equipment. And of course to meet up with our friends from UKSB.
But…at the Ireland meet he will see a whole nother aspect of our trade.
I can imagine a teenager being very bored at SignUK…but not at a Letterhead meet.
And you don’t have to be able to paint to appreciate what you see. -
I will second that Jill, I couldn’t paint if my life depended on it but I do appreciate the work that traditional sign writers do. Just wish I could do it myself 😳
Shane great that you have family all working together, if I did more work and needed to employ someone then I would like it to be family. I know some people say you should never employ family or friends but the way I see it is that family members are more likely to have an interest in the business and want to see it do well.
