  • New Paint drying time before adding Vinyl

How long should I recomend a shops fascia paint should be allowed to dry before installing vinyl.

i guess the main thing is it has been preped properly to avoid the paint coming off with transfer tape.

    cheers

I always suggest at least a week. Even if the surface is dry the paint can still be outgassing which can cause bubbling and even failure of the vinyl. Been caught out with this a couple of times – once when we applied vinyl’s onto a freshly painted wall for an exhibition (I suspected there might be a problem but the exhibition was due to open next day so I had no alternative but to try it, needles to say next day some of the vinyl was peeling off the wall) another time it was a vehicle that had not long been painted and bubbles formed in the vinyl later.

If your client insists there is no time to wait point out the potential pitfalls and make sure they are aware there could be issues

It is an exterior fascia and I have recomended gloss paint. They are asking how long I need as I have warned them to wait.
So a week would be fine, a month probably a bit long,
just want to be safe as I’ve had paint peel off with the transfer tape in the past but think that was mainly poor preperation and no undercoat.

paint will still peel off if it has not been keyed properly, did a big graphic on a luton van once graphic & all of the paint came off with the application tape.

As Kevin says, it’s more a case of the paint keying that prevents the paint peeling off. One thing I’ve found when peeling carrier tape off dodgy surfaces is to completely soak it with a spray bottle until it’s saturated and it’ll almost fall off.
