Got to wait until a week tomorrow John.

I’ve ordered the new handset, but useless O2 can’t tell me when they are likely to have any. 🙁

PS. Tried the Shazam app? How the hell do they do that? 😀

    Sorry Harry.

If you hear a song being played, just hold an iPhone to the speaker and within seconds it will tell you the name of the song, the artist, what album it is taken from, a biography of the artist, together with a discography. Also, one click links to download the song from iTunes, and to any video performances on YouTube.

I reckon it could only be done by magic. In Ireland they’d probably be considered witches and burnt at the stake. 😀

I don’t think it will be the microwaves that do in our brains….it’s the technology that will do it.
Fairies and leprechauns John….we never had any witches here……..oh wait!……………… 😀

Found out yesterday also that there will be no early upgrades on the iPhone with O2, only way is to take on another contract or buy yourself out of the contract

They won’t even allow us to buy the handset and bolt it on 👿

True, but that’s what they originally said about the 3G, but it all changed before release day.

It also begs the question about what happens if a handset gets lost or stolen.

O2 need to be careful about upsetting customers. They won’t have a monopoly on iPhones for much longer.

I’m an Apple user, we plug stuff in and it just works. 😀

Another vote for MobileMe. Fast, fun and fumble free. 😛

are all these new features created by apple specifically as an add-on for the iphone?
what i mean by that is, like google apps etc other folk write allot of the apps and you can freely add them. as do gadgets for your desktop etc on your pc… where i am going is, IF the apps are not soley created by Apple there maybe conflictions in software further down the line?

i love the look and functionality of the iphone but not having buttons would drive me mental. i now have the blackberry bold, which i upgraded from the blackberry pearl and find it a brilliant phone. much better than the pearl.

    Rob,

The apps are created by third parties. That’s a good thing because they create many more apps for the more esoteric uses than would ever be written by Apple alone. In fact, isn’t that the argument that PC users put up, that there are more specialist applications for Windows than MacOS? The same reasoning applies here.

However, any iPhone apps have to be submitted to Apple and pass a rigorous testing procedure before becoming available for download. Apple can control that because apps can only be bought through iTunes.

Anyway, Apple have a far better record for backwards compatibility, both hardware and software, than their competition.

Blackberry screens are too small. 😀

i know what you mean about screen size john but the bold does have a decent sized screen and i have crap eye sight! everything more or less works from the scroll ball and is very easy to use. scroll and push the ball in to click on things. i guess its a preference thing, but cant see buy the keys to a touch screen.

i understand what you are saying about the apps etc and do agree apple seem to fine tune things a bit better. i do also run a top end mac pro at home but even that crashes as much as my pc does when editing videos and that’s what i bought it specifically for and i only have one software on it that is made for macs by apple, "final cut pro". the difference is that every time my mac crashes it auto saves my work so i dont loose anything. just requires a reboot. my point is, it still happens…
im just a bit wary with a "phone" having too many apps applied or a sequence of apps applied that the phone reacts ill too. if this where the case, do the apple shops reformat it for you?

all this said, im not knocking the phone in any way. ide love to be able to use one and would if not for the keys issue. just thinking out loud is all.

what i need to know now is does the iphone have full java and flash support? so when u visit a website that all the functionaltiy of a normal browser is available to a iphone

rob, with regards the qwerty keyboard issue, the iphone has a clever way of knowing what u type? is that correct? so i seen JW tappin away and not even thinking about what button he presses, it just knows…. is that right?

my only problem with home, is i need a Mobile phone booster setup as I cant get o2 signal strong enough, and my windows mobile has an antenna socket for a car arieal which is in the loft

finger tappin is great when drunk and your txt’s still make total sense :lol1: Tried and tested method :lol1:

Oi keep your blackberry for your own posts…… we don’t want that toy in here 😉

As for crashes I’ve only had 1 system in the whole time, the odd software crash and reboot but nothing major… just throw more ram into it and it will be sorted, at the moment I’ve got 14gig in mine and never a problem with software no matter how much strain I put it under

Sadly no java or flash support at the moment but it’s coming soon (so we keep hearing) so i’m sure it will happen eventually

Most apps tie in with Apples MobileMe service which is wonderful for keeping info and other programs in sync

the blackberry has that too mate… very clever.

john i cant remember the memory etc in my mac mate, but there is tons, i had it built to custom spec specifically for videos because my Beefed up PC kept crashing with the videos. still… the mac does same, but i dont loose anything when this happens as i mentioned. video editing is far more strenuous than big images, try chucking 100gig video files about your screen and see how it copes then. 😉 :lol1: :lol1:

    Rob,

Right from the outset Apple were very concerned about third party apps having an adverse effect on the iPhone. Their theory was that people are prepared to accept a computer crash every now and again (if they weren’t then nobody would use Windows) but they wouldn’t accept that behavoir in a phone.

That’s why apps are only available from the iTunes store, so that Apple can rigorously test every single app before release to the public. That is true of new apps and updates to existing ones.

That sometimes leads to a few moans about the time lag between an app or update submission by the author, to it being available for download, but on the whole I think it is probably the best business model.

If you do have a problem, you don’t need an Apple shop to put it right. Just connect it to your computer, fire up iTunes, and hit the RESTORE button, which puts everything back to factory default. Then do a sync and it puts back all your info, together with any apps you have already bought. Never had to use it myself, but it is there.

    Well.
I bought an I phone thinking it was better than my Nokia 95, only thing I Found better was the touch qwerty keyboard,
no decent camera, No video at all, no Radio, and no sat nav, All of which were on the Nokia, and a music player,

Biggest phone mistake I have made, and to top it all, tied into a contract,

Apps are a con, little more than toys, and although cheap, can anyone really recommend one that they couldn’t do without?

And only available from Itunes? monopoly springs to mind,

    Peter

Peter, I agree with some of what you say, the proliferation of small pointless apps is one of my gripes. Hundreds of apps for calculating tips for instance.

However, there is some really good stuff, if you look. Omnifocus is what I use to keep myself organised, Sky+ I could live without I suppose but it is sometimes really handy and what I reckon is the way of the future. The list does go on.

If you haven’t received the MMS from o2, then text MMS to 1010, which will
kickstart it. It’s an o2 problem – they should send the message automatically.
Mine took a couple of hours after kickstarting before MMS was enabled, but it’s
    OK now. 😀
