  • New Computer asking for network password?

Posted by Harry Cleary on September 13, 2006 at 4:39 pm

Just been given a second hand computer, that I want to use for backup. However it was part of a network and asks for the network password at boot up. I was told i could get a programme to get rid of this, any one know what it is?
    Thanks

I thought you could get into it by just clicking cancel on win98 rather than trying to log in

So did I, but this comp was on a network, so it must be different.

Tried Booting F8 and then getting into control panel to change logon?

Here’s some more info I was able to dig up.

"If both the "Require validation by network for Windows access" and "Don’t show last user at logon" policies are enabled, you can bypass the "Require validation…" restriction by entering a nonexistent domain name in the Domain Logon box. When the nonexistent domain name is entered, an error message is not returned; instead, you are prompted for a local logon, which can be bypassed by pressing ESC.

Harry can you sum up the solution?

Just so others know how you solved it.

    Cheers

    Tim.

Spoke too soon, got logged on by F8 and running in safe mode, accessed control panel and changed to windows logon, and hitting esc at password prompt, I can use the computer but some programmes and files are restricted (outlook express etc)
    Any ideas?

I cant see how to do that, I can create a new logon in Users but not change one as far as I can see.

Win9x PassView (4th from bottom) sounds like some thing you could use.

If you remove the network card and/or disable onboard lan then reboot the pc you should no longer get the network password box come up, also uninstall the network card software b4 rebooting. after rebooting and all is ok shut down pc refit network card and reinstall driver and it SHOULD be ok , because it will ask you to put a password in or klik cancel NEVER to be asked for a password again. 😛

You could always try going through the steps of setting up a local area network on this PC (see windows 98 manual for steps to go through) – this would then allow you to create your own password to over-write the existing (unknown) password.

Having said that, I always thought pressing "esc" got around this – you’re not logging onto a network so there is no need for a password – so just bypass that step.
