Can anyone let me know where I can source 25mm Foamex or something similar. Client looking for wrapped 25mm Foamex panels to be hung on the wall. They need to be lightweight and solid.

    Thanks

I’ve not bought any in years, but William Cox used to deal in it.

Just a thought, but is it an option to use a composite or thinner foam and bond a strip to the edge to create the illusion of 25MM board but save on the cost and weight??

Hi Bob thanks I will give them a try. I am trying to persuade them to let me create a wooden frame with 3 or 5mm each side as they are being wrapped they wont see the edges anyway. But they have it in there head that 25mm Foamex would be better. (Customers 🙄 ) Designers have given them the spec. I think I will have to make one up to see if can tell the difference. They are having spacers on the back to hold them away from the wall. There are to be quite a few of these so worth the effort.

Warren yes they are trying to create that sort of look.

create folded Pans out of hoarding board composite.

you will get foamex from Robert Horne, Amari etc
19mm is thickest you will get and its heavy!

    Rob,
they don’t recommend using hoarding grade fro trays due to ali skin on hoarding board being so thin

yeh i know Kev… its not a sign though mate.

its interior and just to give the effect of depth.
its going to also be covered in a print, wrapped around the edges.
its also being stood off the wall on some form of stand off. so the return will not be supporting anything.

i was going to suggest dibond, which is obviously perfect, but a fair bit more expensive just to give the effect of depth, if you see what i mean?

it would also be very easy to just create a built-up 3d pan from foamex.
just rip up 2 inch returns and tensol on its edge. but my take on the above is they are looking for something seamless with a nice finish. now that said, the edges of Foamex is pourous and will not take to the board the same as the gloss face.

What about 6mm MDF panel with 19mm MDF frame glued on the back to create the depth.

Obviously would need a seal putting over it before wrapping.

I think if you start messing around with Foamex it could get very labour intensive and may not bond well, as Rob says you will be bonding a sealed edge to a porous edge.

Colin you say there is quite a few but how many / how large are they ?

Tim there is about 30 to start with and to be replaced every 3-4months size 700 s 850mm. MDF as described might also be an answer not tried wrapping MDF before.

Rob I have done lots of these on 10mm Foamex before and not had a problem with sticking at the edges. I have even done these 15mm by mounting 10mm & 5mm together with double sided adhesive sheet. The tray idea would be ok if I was a competent sign maker with the correct kit but this is a new area for me and don’t think I am quite ready for taking on that sort of idea just yet. (little steps 😀 ) I suppose I could mount the 19mm you mentioned & 5mm Foamex sheet together but it just seems overkill for this sort of job which is why I thought of making wooden frame with 3-5mm Foamex each side cheaper and much lighter.

Why is there a problem bonding edge to face with foam?? I’ll stick edge to edge and face to face, face to edge works just the same.

I’d probably do the return in 10mm to give a good strong bond, and to make it less flexible and remain upright when trying to bond it etc, but I’d be amazed if anyone could have a problem building it out of foam.

The amount you need and the size they are, just get the suppliers to cut the whole lot to size including the rebate and it’ll be a piece of cake.
