  • Need some help finding some vinyl please?

Posted by Mike Batty on January 8, 2004 at 10:41 pm

    Hi guys
Dont come on here often as I am not really in the sign field but I am an airbrush and custom paintwork artist.
I have recently lost a supply of a certain type of masking vinyl which was very low tack, flexible and left little or no glue residue. Troubl is I cant find any of this stuff anywhere else.
I am using as a substitute metamark masking vinyl but in honesty in comparison to my last stuff it is very high tack, goes brittle when solvents are used over it and leaves more glue residue than a glue and bone factory.
Any help please folks would be greatly appreciatted.
    Ta Mike

    Mike,

I don’t use much paint mask but usually get it from http://www.dorotape.co.uk (01858 431642), they do about four different types from Aslan so might be worth a look.

Yeh thanks I have used it. trouble is because I do a lot of custom motorcycle work the solvents seem to attack it. I have contacted the companies you others guys mentioned and asked for some samples so i’m gonna wait and see. Thanks everyone for your help.

Have you tried PMF flexible grey spray mask , We buy from Allprint supplies.

it is designed for use on curatin siders, but we use 200m + a week on coaches. Their industrial paint chemist ran a lot of chemical attacks and baking at temps upto approx 80 degrees etc.. and this material came out the best.

It is see-thru so you can easily position the film. As with any masking remove it when the paint is ‘green’ and it leaves a very good, sharp edge. Very low tack, we have had very few problems with it leaving glue on or atacking the paint finish beneath.

    Hope that helps.

Oramask 810 is low tack, very soft, and easily lifts without ‘snapping’ back.

I get mine from The Vinyl Corporation but it is probably available from any Oracal supplier

Ive tried the Spandex, not very good for what I want. Too much adhesive and too brittle after having thinner on it.

    Hi,

I have used MacMask (macTac Gear), This is a translucent green colour stuff. Its low tack, leaves no residue even after baking at 70 deg C. Used this for some stencil work for Westland Helicopters on anodised aluminium with an epoxy primer (high VOC), so it should stand up to your solvent abuse! Leaves a fine, crisp edge too. If you want to try a bit, then e-mail me your address and I will send you a small lump to try. I get the stuff from Sign TradeSupplies, 01634 815711. Based in Kent, but delivery is good, and seems to be a tenner regardless of what you order! Hope this helps.
