We are getting a lot of work which is increasing for leaflets and business cards but trying to weigh up the option of spending £50k – £80K on a xerox or konica minolta machine (with finishing equipment) or using a trade supplier?

My main question is a standard trade supplier going to work out cheaper than doing it ourselves?

depends on who you use, I pay 19.00 plus vat and free delivery for 500 double sided mat laminated cards on 400gm

Looked into it and really was not worth it for me

Fairprint in Dundee – ask for a trade price list.

Send ’em the file and your stuff gets delivered…

+1 for fair print, we’ve put a fair for £k’s their way lately.

We do have a xerox, and finishing equipment, but for larger jobs, or where time permits trade supplier all day long.

What is the turnaround like as we need most jobs within 2 days can they forward straight to the customer?

Also if we were to produce 170gsm gloss leaflets full colour single or double sided on the above equipment what would you guess our cost to manufacture would be?

I’m sure they can do two days on some items, but stand by for a increase in cost.

We typically work on 5days for litho jobs. 😉

Another +1 for fair print, I’ve also used http://www.printcarrier.com with good results and quick turnaround

Horses for courses, I spent £60k in January doing the same, haven’t even had time to launch the new business and just letting customers know as and when they order from us and just from the work from that we are either breaking even or a small profit after paying off the finance and bills so in 4-5 years time when it’s paid off I’ll be making an extra 3k a month in profit.

If you have the finance and determination to do it then you will be reaping it in years to come but not from day 1. I found outsourcing terrible (and personally just hate relying on others) and found I was potentially damaging our reputation because we were letting down people with a £30 business card order because delivery late or just not quick enough, colour issues etc etc, we stopped offering it until we could do it ourselves and have full control over every aspect.

It’s working for us and I believe it’s a direction a lot of sign companies are actually starting to take from what I’ve seen in magazines and from reps.

But it’s down to finance and how hard you work to make it work as it is a big big investment.

    Hope that helps

    Cheers

    Warren

If I was going down the route of buying a machine and finshing equipment what would you recommend.
