  • Need help which one to buy?

Posted by Tara on September 3, 2004 at 8:19 am

Hi my partner is starting up his own sign firm and can not decide which cutter to purchase. He has in the past always used Graphtec but has also now read up upon Summa. We do have to be careful about money as we also have to purchase a van etc the Summa Pro 750 is cheaper than the Graphtec FC5100 but what is Summa like? I think he should go for what he knows he has always found Graphtec to be fine so why change on the other hand the Summa might be better we really need to order today any ideas?

    Thanks

    Tara

I would go for the Graphtec, but I am slightly biased.

Graphtec’s back up is almost cetainly better than Summa IF the machine goes wrong.

The Summa is also a great machine though. How much different are they in price? wouldn’t have thought it was that much. If so surely it’s a good idea to stick what you know & are happy with?

Thing is Tara those 11 people that have viewed this thread, are probably the same as me and you …. have no experience of these cutters so are unable to comment, but they have a look at the post just in case to see if they might be able to help???

Have you tried the advance search to see old posts and comments?

    Hi Tara,
I would lean towards the Graphtec, I have a FC4100-130 and its a quality machine. I have also used Rolands which were fine, sorry i cant comment on the Summa as i have never used one.
    Hope this helps

    Thanks Carrie,

I did have a search for old messages but could not find anything I know some people might not have an answer I thought me posting again could not hurt.

With you having to order today it doesnt give much time to get a few opinions from here … hope you get sorted and Im sure you’ll both make the right decision.

As Brian said perhaps its best to stick with what you know so as you dont have the extra stress of trying to work out the abilitys and functions of a different one, on top of setting up your new business aswell??

I have a Graphtec FC3100 – 60 and a Summa T750 pro with OPOS. Both perform very very well, I think the Graphtec is better at setup and especially when loading smaller bits of vinyl, runs very straight, the Summa pulls vinyl through as you need it (Graphtec may do this now) which is good. Cut quality is excellent for both, overall if I had to choose the Graphtec would get the nod, the one occassion I needed a spare (due to me dropping a role of vinyl on the lcd) Graphtec not only had the bit there, they sent it next day – it wasn’t very expensive and the talked me through the fitting over the phone. hope this helps you with your choice

I have had both at the same time, but my preference was the Graphtec. Had a few problems with the Summa, but none at all with the Graphtec.

As the summa got older I had tracking problems, but the graphtec at the same age was still as good as the day I bought it.

I was recently in the same position as you; I had narrowed my choices down to the Summa or Graphtec. Having read a lot of old posts on here, I decided on the Graphtec because of peoples’ experiences of the support from Graphtec. Not that anyone had bad things to say about the Summa, but I heard a lot of good things about Graphtec’s after sales support and it is an important thing to consider. On site warranty, for example, as opposed to return-to-base is a must as far as I’m concerned.

Forbie, didn’t you have to return your summa for repairs recently? What was the service like and how much of a pain was it?

Edit: No, it was FreddieFunk, I think. Sorry Forbie.

    Hi all
just a quick note, i have run a summa D60 for the past 2 half years in that time one fault which was a pinch roller, spoke to Edward Mathius who i purched the machine from and he to summa etc part was with me for 9 oclock next day with the assurance that if i was wrong and the pinch roller did not cure the problem then a engineer could be sent to check out the problem under warranty due it still being covered by the 3 year warranty.

Probably a bit late this post but might help someone in the future

You won’t go wrong with either of these cutters – they are both good cutters

I think the Graphtec has 2 year on site warranty whilst the Summa has 3

Dont know how much the Graphtec costs but you can pick up a Summa for £2k

    Hi Tara,

I have read all of the replies that you got and i can only recommend that you go for what you know. I have used Graphtec and Mutoh machines before. Mutoh is a fast machine, however, Graphtec was far superior for small lettering and accuracy.
