Need help mug printing

I have the C82 as well as a 1290s & must say it’s pretty quiet, the odd occasion the paper feed is noisy but I think that’s when it doesn’t sit squarely in the feeder.

I also use Listawood inks in the C82, are you using the Listawood profiles? Sounds like possibly not. I loaded the profiles from the CD & haven’t had one print that didn’t sublimate properly. I have nothing but praise for the system, I’ll have to leave the mug question to someone else as I am only printing T’s & mousemats at the moment.

sorry i am not using profiles. Please are these necessary? does any print without using these and what are the alternatives? thanks a lot

I don’t use Listawood so cannot comment on their profiles but they should give you an edge when matching colours. Funnily enough I’m getting a similar problem with Xpres new ink at the moment! They say you can print straight from Corel.

The ‘weakness’ of the print towards the edges could be:

1, You haven’t got the transfer tight to the mug, you cannot have any space between transfer and whatever you are printing onto.

2. You are trying to press a larger transfer than your press will accept, I always go to a maximum 190 wide by 65mm deep to give a good margin.

3. Time and temperature are very much trial and error. When you increase the time the life of the print may be improved but you may also start to bleach out the colours. 4 minutes sounds a long time to me?? I usually print 2.5 – 3 minutes.

4. Your transfer must be perfectly dry. If you are printing something as heavily inked as Navy Blue you will need to leave the prints to dry or speed up the process by laying on top of your T-shirt press for a minute or so.

Some things to try:

1. Get a sample Colour Change Mug and see how that prints. When it gets hot the colour changes to white but the handle area , being thicker rnormally remains the base colour. Check the time until the handle itself, or about 10mm of it starts to change and you know the rest of the mug is baking!

2. If your problem is with fading print at the thicker bottom of the mug, press it for 3 mins and turn it over for the final minute. Heat rises and all that.

I have an Epson 980 which is noisy when feeding paper!! 😕

Which mug press are you using?

Time, temp and pressure are critical with mugs.

Like Martin said the transfer must be tight around the mug otherwise it does give a faded look, and if the ink is not dry you can experience blow out (feathering around edges, or nice flame effect up the mug )

The white side of the paper should be facing you when you look at the printer, what resolution are you using? Did you set the correct paper type in the driver? These factors can affect your print out.

Don’t worry about the strange colours after printing this is normal for dye-sub, and they change upon pressing.

Another thing I just thought of have you done a nozzle check to make sure there are no gaps in your printout? This is a must for every time you start up a dye-sub printer, it not only saves time, but ink in the long run since you don’t have wasted printouts.

Your Epson C82 print drivers are designed to work with the Epson ink carsdges, the Listawood ink without the profile will not give the correct colours when you print. The profiles are simple to install in the C82 & provide the necessary adjustment. There are a couple of mousemats in the gallery if you want to see samples, may not help 😀

Please is there anywhere else the profiles can be downloaded from. The link to download the profiles from the colour management page in Listawood’s website is under construction. I don’t know whether it’s worth trying another print out without getting the colour profile first. Please someone help me. I hope someone in Listawood reads this.

ps : does everyone print using this profile thingy?is there another way round it. pls where do u set the resolution and what resolution should be used. i didnt change the printer settings. i just went with the default

you can get the profiles from Listawood on a cd, just give them a ring.

To do a nozzle check click on start on the desktop followed bycontroll panel, then printers, view installed printers, right click on the epson ikon, click printing properties, then utility tab. 2nd one down is nozzle check.

For paper type, open an image, click print, then properties, setup print device, properties again. In the middle of the page is paper options, select plain paper, on the same page select photo or best photo, depending on how good you want it, then click page layout & check the mirror image box.

That sets you ready to print. I would now try a print & press it & see what you think of the colours, if you are happy, fire away. Personally I wouldn’t work without the profile, but I am using photographic images, where I am critical about the colors.

just checked out the Roltech link, notice you don’t get a info sheet curious how you install and set up. I use Uv Artainium inks at present and a set up procedure is detailed for coreldraw. It tells you what monitor settings to use, printer settings etc. You then go in to the Epson printer properties and set up a dye sub setting. On the epson preferences main page you click on custom, set the mirror print on, paper to normal and 720 dpi all of the other boxes will set there selves from this, the last one is put the dot in no colour control. The reason for this last item is to stop the epson control coming in to play. Are the Roltech ICC systems the same are they running with the epson control still on.

Just curious because thinking of trying out roltech inks

I also use the Mug Pro Press, and print the earthenware mugs from Listawood at 370 deg. for 2.75mins. and have no problems with the result. This temp and time has been in use since I changed to Rotech over 12 months ago, 1 of my first mugs I did with these inks still lives in the dishwasher, and though slight fade the image is still clear and sharp.

I use the text and photo setting for the C82 printer driver (appears to equate to approx 720dpi which for vectors is fine) for photos etc. I use the photo option (appears to equate to 1440dpi), I personally think anything higher is wasting ink.

I have the Rotech ICC profile set up for this printer, and colours come out fine, admittedly lately all I’m seeing is RED (due to Ruby Anniversary for Car Club 😮 )

On the pressure side with the Mug Pro, you need not too much resistance when you close the press (i.e. small amount of pressure needs to be applied to the handle to close the press).

Best thing is to get the cd from Listawood, It has a whole lot on it besides the profile, including how to set it up, hints & tips, cooking times etc. One thing, on my C82 you can’t set the DPI manually, least, I haven’t seen where 😆 Different to my 1290s where you have full controll

Without looking at it to remind myself, I think I left the Epson controll on automatic.

Must say I’m colour concious, sublimation is an offshoot from ltd. edition fine art prints were I print on 13×30 inch paper & make my living. I’m managing to match sublimated images to the art images pretty well

they look good! do u have one of any photos done? i used a photograph for mine, i think one with a photo will give me a better idea of how fine the picture on a mug can be. if anyone as any mug with photos on them i’ll really love to see them
