My new shop sign.
Posted by Jill Marie Welsh on December 16, 2009 at 7:44 pmFinally got this thing up.
It was the most difficult sign I have ever done, as I am in no way a carpenter or engineer and did not know if it would work.
Had help via telephone from one of my Letterhead friends. It’s all on ½" factory-finished MDO, cut to size with a jigsaw then hand painted with both flat and gloss paint. It’s double-sided, and the ends are covered with aluminum roof flashing to make it look like a solid unit.
It’s about 7′ tall.
I wanted something retro/fun.
The alignment of the "Jill’s" panel is not correct but I will be darned if I’ll fix it! hahahaI will add some lights and a brick enclosure on the bottom come springtime. I have been with only half a sign for nearly a year, having to make a correx patch on the one side of the old sign after a wind storm.

Can’t find them Ian…can you check the name? Is it the primed MDO they do? Sorry Jill…not trying to hijack 😳
-
Real class Jill, you ought to think of making a living out of this 😀
Cool as……….
-
I really like that Jill, you should be proud of putting that together.
I love the funky off-the-wall style/shape to it too, with the posts at an angle etc. I also like the gloss hairline bean shapes on the matt background… -
Nice one Jill…why didn’t you put "Tel:" before your number :lol1:
-
Jill looks really nice, like to colours very eye catching. Rich x

Hi Jill
Sorry to high jack this post, just wanted to say Happy Birthday to your Daughter I do hope she had a great Day.
Paul 😀
-
Thanks Paul, and Happy Birthday to your son!
Rachael is mad at me because while she was in the other room yesterday morning I updated her FB status to something stupid. (She had left the screen up on the computer)Thanks for the nice words about the sign, I also feel it reflects me more than my old one did. It was a real pain to make though! I did not want to even have a phone number on it, and you know how I feel about "Tel:"
It’s loosely based on an old 1950s motel sign I used to like. And I was watching hockey on the Versus network two nights ago, they had all-caps Brush Script spelling out HAPPY HOLIDAYS in one of their headers. I nearly emailed the network to complain.

Late 1950s is the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw it.
I seem to remember that some cinema adverts of that period used a similar style too.

Mum’s A who would have one. 😀
Thanks I will pass it on to him.
You have time to be watching hockey, I dont know you Lady’s of leisure, keep up the good work it’s always a pleasure to see.

hasn’t the police already warned you about your flashing Jill? 😕 :lol1:

No but my elderly senile neighbor accused me of stealing his silverware.
The day I put in the posts for this sign the cops came to my house, I thought it was about the sign (I did get a permit) but it was about the neighbor.
😮 -
What stuff do you use to polish her silverware and does it look good in the lounge?
-
The problem is that the neighbor already accused and reported his nephew for stealing the same silverware about 5 years ago.
I was going to make a panel for the bottom of this saying SILVERWARE FOR SALE. -
Sign looks great, even more effective when you see the side on view to get an idea of the depth. Definitely has that 50’s B-Movie / Motel vibe.
-
Unique and individual just the way i like it!!! great work Jill 😀 😀 😀
-
A great looking sign but i bet not at 1950`s prices to make well done..
-
I have to guess at some of this stuff.
Permit: $75
Gallon flat black latex $21
Posts: $30
Flashing: $17
2 sheets MDO: $60 (I bought single-side finished pieces that were damaged at one end and primed/painted the raw side myself, the rest was scrap from other jobs)
Hardware: $15
Concrete: $30
All other paint/primer was leftover from other jobs.
I still will have to buy wiring, lights and rent a ditch-digger, That will be about $400.
But I have gotten a lot of comments so far from the locals, so I guess in a way it is cheap effective advertising.
Thanks for all the comments!
