My First Wrap, advice needed please?
Posted by Matt Taylor on September 13, 2012 at 8:56 amGood morning!
Now I’m after a bit of advice! (as usual!!)
A friend of mine has just bought a Vivaro, and asked me to do some graphics on it. He doesn’t just want standard cut vinyl, he wants a sort of part wrap on it.
I sat down with him yesterday and came up with this design.
Now whilst I have wrapped bonnets and roofs, I have never wrapped anything to this scale. I have made my mate aware of this, and told him there may be the odd blemish within the wrap, which he was happy with, since he’s having it at a very good price!
What material would you use on this? It won’t be printed, will just be a straight 2 colours.
Cheers,
Matt

Use a proper wrapping vinyl for the blue with a colour matched plotter vinyl for the logos. Any 3M material with CV3 adhesive will be the easiest to use, but make sure you clean EVERYTHING really well, remove window rubbers/wing mirrors/door handles/indicators etc. Be careful with the curve as it goes through the recess – its easy to get wobbles in the edge of the vinyl, but you can cover those up with the dark blue stripe if needed. Nice design!

Thanks John.
I have just spoken to Glen at All Print Supplies and he is sending me out a good few samples of different wrapping vinyl, so I can have a play around with them and see which I find easier. I have bought a load of cleaning stuff, which I use even on the simplest of jobs, can’t stand dirt on vans and cars!
The customers unit is 3 down from mine, so they will remove all rubbers, mirrors, handles etc, so less obstacles in the way!
Thanks for the help John, and the comment on the design, I love it 🙂

Hi Jon,
I spoke to them this morning, they have recently started to offer wrap vinyls. I have used them since day 1 of me trading, for all my vinyl and supplies and have good repor with them.
They are watchign swatches made up of all the wrap films they can offer 🙂

What brands do they stock? Don’t skimp on the vinyl – pay good money for a good brand with a good adhesive and the job will be easier and last longer.

Just looked at their website & I can’t see any wrap vinyl at all. They do sell a cast vinyl which I am guessing a supplier will tell you is suitable for wrapping but you need to be experienced at fitting vinyl to be able to use a cast for that sort of aplication
-
Im sure the samples they are sending me are KPMF Airelease and Avery Supreme
-
That should be fine then. The Avery will be the best. What price per metre are they doing it for?
-
They do sell KPMF vinyl already, there are some materials mentioned as being new but no mention of Avery that I could see.
KPMF air release is only available in black & white as far as I know Matt so make sure they do the blue in air release before you order in for the job as there is a difference between the air release & the standard adhesive on the other colours.
Avery supreme has had some great reviews but price wise is way above the price of the KPMF. -
Done use Oracal 751 for that :lol1:
It will do it, but isn’t the easiest.
Trouble with using a wrap film, with air release is the reduced colour choice.
Oracal do a colour change vinyl, which they’re adding air release too, but I’ve not got a swatch yet.

I may be wrong but the only samples I get from Allprint are A4 size which to be fair aren’t good for much.

Thanks again for the all the advice guys. You’ve prevented a lot of head scratching on my part!
I will await these samples, have a play around and see what I find easier.
When I have been helping on wraps, or doing bonnets, roofs etc we always used to use KPMF VWS, but to be honest I really didn’t think it was that great, compared to the small amount of times I used an Avery or 3M product.
Does anyone else feel that way about KPMF? I always find their range rather "cheapo"?

Just get some 3M! As long as you can get the right colour that is…
-
Thanks!
How much vinyl do you think I would need for this wrap? Just an estimate? I will measure it over the weekend 🙂

Maybe not a fair question Matt, Just look at the price difference between the products. If you are asking if VWS will do the job the answer is yes it will, if you are asking if it is as easy & fast to fit then I would have to say no it’s not even close. End of the day you get what you pay for, either an easy to fit film that will go on pretty quick with a highish cost or a cheaper film that you need a lot more experience to fit well & will take you longer to fit no matter how experienced you are.

You should be able to guestimate the amount of vinyl you need from your drawing.
I’d go for 3M but not sure if you could get the right colour. -
Thanks Neil. I spoke to a mate of mine that works for Sign Rite, he does wraps in his sleep and he also advised me on using 3M.
I’m having a swatch delivered tomorrow so I will meet with my customer and he can choose which colour he prefers 🙂

One way to get an idea of how much vinyl you need is to draw oblongs scaled to the width of the material you are using in your design program, and place them on the design roughly where you will fit the vinyl. Do one side, work out how much linear material there is and then double it, then allow enough for the bonnet (say 1.6m, which at 1520mm wide you will only need just over half of half of), and the offcut might even do the front bit of the roof.
Then allow a bit for wastage! How much you allow depends on how many mistakes you think you might make, but I would always have too much than not enough!
Does that make sense?
