  • my computer has just went ping, what do i do now?

Posted by Marcella Ross on June 16, 2007 at 4:21 pm

Well last night my pc ‘died’. I was sitting on UKSB and there was a loud ‘ping’ and the pc went off. It wouldn’t switch back on.
So today I bought a new PSU………… put it in and power ran through the pc again …………… but it wouldn’t boot up, nothing………. didn’t even attempt to and the on/off switch didn’t work. The power ran through it the second the lead was connected.
So the next step was thinking perhaps it was a power surge last night that caused problems ……….. maybe it had blown the motherboard too?
Another trip to the computer shop and purchased a Winfast K8 motherboard………… came home fitted it and guess what ………. the new PSU wouldn’t work. Dead as a dodo again.
The power lead is fine as we used it to run this pc and it’s fine so that’s not the problem.

Anyone got any ideas on what we can try next?

    🙁

Try unplugging every thing it should still try to start with just a mother board and cpu (post boot) you need the monitor to see whats happening

tried that Nick …………. John unplugged everything except the PSU and – zilch! I can only assume that the new PSU has ‘blown’ too? But if that’s the case I don’t know what’s causing it. 😕 As i mentioned the power lead is perfect it worked on this pc.

John isn’t in just now and he’s the one with the brain when it comes to pc’s …………… 😀

well if you had a "uninterrupted power supply" (ups) that would help with any spikes on the power supply

oh OK ………….. I’ll pass that on to John when he comes in ………. 😳

Nick, not entirely sure what you mean but it just plugs directly into the wall. Can’t try the CPU elsewhere.
There is no power getting to the PSU at all ………… but we’re going to try another PSU from another pc that we don’t use ……… see what happens.

do you have a volt meter to test the power supply?

never had a problem with the power supply before Nick ……….
John is just rechecking his connections on the motherboard in case he’s connected something wrong.

I’ll be back if it still doesn’t work! 😮

I meant the power supply in the PC.

    Well ……………. we’re almost there 😀
John took the motherboard back out and took his time connecting it back up again (he’d tried to do it in a rush earlier before going out to work) anyway, there had obviously been a wrong connection because we’re booting up now!
The PSU wasn’t working because of an incorrect connection on the motherboard.
I’m using the other pc at the minute whilst we install drivers etc again in the other one.

Looks like we’re off and running again.

    Thank God!
