  • My accountant NERALY got scammed

Guy upcountry ordered 10 badges , put the money in my acct near the end of the month , but instead of 20 quid (lets say) put in 2000 quid – Phoned up in a panic saying his wife had misread it and she had put his staffs wages in our account. Would we please refund the 1980 quid immediately as he needed it for wages. Gave us a bank acct no and sent a deposit slip showing 2000 quid CASH had been deposited. I looked at my bank acct on the internet and saw that there was a 2000 quid deposit – but wasnt cash was a CHEQUE. Looked at the headers on all the faxes and they were all from postnets (tho the order was on a convincing looking letterhead).
Phoned the guy (cell no only) and it was a Nigerian voice that answered and I asked what was going on , actually I told him “You are a F—g scam artist” – phone went dead and was never answered again. The cheque has subsequently bounced. My accountant thought it was legit — asked me to do the deposit – I was less than convinced and decided to investigate – was a close call.

Blimey! 😮 Close call that one, bloody good scam though… not terribly well thought out though as you would check it was cleared funds before you refunded.

Are guns legal over there Rodney? (:) Just in case he pops in for a sign one day 😀

Dewi , guns are not just legal over here , but almost an essential. I hate em tho , but open up at 5 am and close at 6.30 pm so am always armed with my 38 special. In 20 years , than g-d , I have never had to draw it. Not even sure if the thing will work!!!!
Perhaps its time to sharpen up my “crack marksman” skills and go off to the gun range – knowing my luck I’ll sprain my wrist with the first clip :_)
I wasnt bad with a F1, R4 and an Ak47 when I was conscripted to the forces but that was a good 25 yrs ago.
Scam guys in JHB , 1000 miles from me, the account was in the name of some poor salaried slob , so undoubtedly he’s gonna get it , he was probably an innocent bystander. I reported it to the bank that told me I was the 6th person to complain and they closed the account. Im sure thats not an impediment to the scammers.
Thing is , the guy faxed a list of names for the badges and a logo , very convincing scam, I had been deliberately targeted by someone that knew what we do etc. Even I was almost taken in , a little voice in my head said hang on and the Friday (wage day) I was supposed to do the transfer was a real busy day so it got put near the back of the pile for immediate attention (paying back money or out money is painful and tends to get put in the “painful , must do , but it can wait a small while while I lump it with the other painful stuff to do and get it all over in a single shot” queue)

Thanks for the warning Rodney, it’s all too easy to get drawn into these scams and it’s only by making others aware that we can try to make it more difficult for the scumbags (:)

nice one rodney, thanks for the heads up, i have had my fair share of scams here on this site. the good thing i have going for me is its only access, no product as such.
having said that, i am exactly like you now, if a mistake is made, or an error reported with an account, or even a refund due… i dont just run in apologise and refund/grant access etc i check it properly and make some time for it. life these days is always 100mph, scammers catch us out by playing on this, we dont think, just do it… 10 minutes later we realise we have just been duped! 😮

Robert, that reminds me, I was trying to send you that £32 I owed you from ages and ages ago…. silly me, managed to transfer £32,000! 🙁 I know its a pain mate, didn’t mean to do it, but could you send it me back… I’d prefer cash, £20s if pos, in non-consecutive unmarked English notes 😀 If its a little busy at the moment, I can always pop round and collect it 😀

    Cheers, Dewi
