    Hi All,

Can anyone out there using a Mutoh Rockhopper 38 Printer , tell me if this machine is any good. I’m looking for a new printer that not to big and not to small. The size sounds just right for what I’m looking for. Just need someone to say "Yes, Its a lovely machine!"

Can anyone give me some pointers on the Mutoh Rockhopper 38 Printer
Is the print quality any good as I would like to make canvas photos like I am now, but with a water based inkjet.

    Your help and guidance please.

    Kind regards from
    Mark

as far as i can remember the rocky 38 is a is a mutoh falcon conversion that uses eco-solvent inks. the machines themselves can turn out good quality but are not known as the most reliable of digital printers.

they use epson 9000 series parts and tend to not print very well below 720x720dpi. out put of around 2m per hour at this resolution.

fixed dot machine however i think from most rips you can choose small or large dot but not both together (variable). should be fine for canvas type work however i cant remember if the machine has head height adjustment or not. if the price is good then go for it.

Karl had one of these and I believe it used to give him a lot of problems although not really sure what sort, I do know he got rid of it and bought a JV3 which he is very happy with.

I HAVE HAD A ROCKY 38 FOR TWO TROUBLESOME YEARS.
TODAY I HAVE COULUR OUTPUT PROBLEMS.
COLOURS ARE WASHED OUT—WEAK. I RAN SEVERAL CLEANING PROGRAMS AND FLUSHED THE SYSTEM BUT NO RESULTS. COULD IT BE COLOUR HEAD FAILURE?
A JOB HAD TO BE STOPPED DUE TO SPATTERS OF DARK INKS AND AFTER A CLEANING PROG THE RESULT WAS GREEN PRINTING AS A YELLOW ,I.E. NO BLUE BEILG PRINTED.
    ANY IDEAS?
    BARRY

Martin, I still have my Rocky, But at the moment am not using it.
My advice on the Rocky 38…….scrap it. Mutoh have ceased production of this now and about time too. This machine caused me severe financial problems when trying to rely on it to run a business with. Oh dear, don’t start me off!!!!!!!!!! 👿 👿 (:) (chat.)

Why Solvent if you do fine art , have you seen the new 12 colour Canon 8000 44" wide ?, its aqeous but only £5450 and prints at 10m2 an hour.

Worth checking out for high quality interior work.

    Hi Cameron,

The reason for the solvent route is rather obvious, no more liquid laminating canvas prints. Three coats of lacquer and the smell of it is getting on my nerves. Plus we are a sign company as well so external prints are now required from us, which we are getting more and more requests for, and having to sub it out.

Do you have any good deals going for the good old Roland printer?
