• Mugwrap report

In past threads some of us talked about the Cactus wraps & the German wrap on eBay.

I finally got to use the German wrap & scrapped the first mug, temperature a bit low 😥

But, I upped the temperature & low & behold everything worked well & the mugs for my first order came out just great.

I found the clamp a bit awkward to start with but I figure that with a bit more practise (read more orders) I’ll get along just fine & probabl get some more wraps 🙂

Any details on timings and temperatures required?

I was always lead to believe that doing mugs via the wrap method took a long time – is this the case?

15 minutes at 400F was what I gave them in a little worktop mini oven, but I must qualify the temperature. It took a couple of hours adjusting the oven thermostat to read 400 on an oven thermometer, the 1st one was the scrap mug, so I upped the temp on the thermometer to 425 & voila.
So when is 400 400 as my science teacher used to say 😆

I know this is quite a bit longer than a mugpress, but I wanted to test the market before investing in a press, & also, you can cook a batch in that 15 minute period, so maybe 5 at a time gets you down to similar times as useing a press

What’s your thoughts, I know you use a mug press, do you think the mugpress is the way to go?

My brain tells me the press must be quicker for one offs, but then the investment cost, the wrap way, is much lower.

with a mug press, you won`t beable to do 100% wraps.

I have to leave approx 10mm top and bottom, and alittle bit more towards the handle.

I can buy a deeper element, which will solve the first problem, but with a press, I believe you`ll always get the gap close to the handle.

I believe you`re best having both options if you can afford them.

    How much was the wrap?
If the cooking time is approx 15mins, you should have approx 10 wraps to match the production of the heatpress.

thanks for your imput, I’m trying to figure out why I would need 10 wraps to match the press output given that press times I’ve seen quoted are 3-4 minutes. I could be missing the point

The wrap was £20 on ebay by the way, or you can buy them direct from the company for 55Euros!!

I press my mugs for 3 mins, so in teorey I get 5 mugs per 15 mins.
While the first mug is cooking, all the other mugs can be taped up ready for a quick turn over.

When you are wrapping, all the mugs have to be wrapped at the same time, so the time required will be a little longer.

How long would you estimate each mug takes to line up the image and appliy the clamp?

I figured that out this afternoon while sat in a coffee shop 🙂

Time to tape & clamp ? I didn’t time it but I reckon maybe a minute each or slightly less?

But (thinks) if I had 30 wraps, I could cook 15 (theory again) in each 15 minutes, cost of equipment similar

If you can afford both the clamps and the press, then thats the way to go. Then you can offer both options. Charging extra for the full body wrap!!

I was going to say, £20 for a wrap is a bit steep, but a mug press costs about £600+, so it`s not a bad investment considering.

Did you only find 1 supplier for the wraps?
Do they get cheaper the more you buy?
Was the oven used, just a smaller verion of a domestic/home cooker?

I bought the wrap on ebay as the Cactus wraps from the US were unavailable at the time, but they are available again & I will probably buy a quantity of them as they do a quantity discount.

The oven is actually a domestic worktop oven/grill with an element in the top & bottom so the heat is not so variable (top to bottom, as a larger oven.
