  • Mounting a Composite panel to Hardboard

I have a new shop front fascia to do which involves mounting a 1800mm x 890mm ACM panel to a hardboard panel next to the shops front door.
I normally would just screw this in place but now find the hardboard panel is quite thin and I am worried about going right through with the screws. Impossible to measure how thick the board is, so thinking of glueing the panel on instead.
What would the best adhesive for this, such as `Hard as nails` or `Empire Platinum Extreme` or VHB tape (which I have in stock) or something else.
the hardboard panel is painted and I amm attaching Hoarding ACM with an aluminium rear face.
    cheers
    Stuart

Never used anything like no more nails so can’t comment on how good it is but you would have to hold the panel in place while it cured a bit to take hold. VHB would do it as long as the paint is in good condition or you could rivet it in place if there isn’t a problem with fixings going all the way through.

Just a quick thought, when I use VHB tape I like to be able to put quite a bit of pressure into applying it, is this going to be possible with the hardboard panel it’s going on? Sorry Stuart, having trouble picturing the layout.

Thanks Martin, that has really confirmed my decision to try VHB tape. Talked to someone at Empire yesterday who confirmed that tape was probably better as its an instant bond and if paint is in good condition would be very strong.

It shoudn’t be a problem getting decent pressure as the panel is at ground level next to the front door of the shop unit.

I would still be looking at getting some kind of mechanical fix on there Stuart……..you are literally bonding a sign to a coat of paint and it will fail at some point

Does it really matter if the fixings do go right through the board?….what’s behind?
