  • Mobile temporary finger post signs?

Posted by Myles Brewer on January 12, 2012 at 11:10 am

    Hi All,

I have a customer who is looking for a mobile temporary finger-post system if there is such a thing.

It’s for a college campus for an annual festival. They are looking for approx 20 posts with approx 5 finger signs per post. they want them to look old style (Cast Iron style) & want to be able to move them around & then store them away after the festival is over.

Is there a heavy base out there that would maybe take an aluminium or plastic post, is there an old style plastic/ aluminium post & finger sign system out there?

    Any suggestions welcome on this.

Cost is obviously an issue, they don’t want to be paying for a genuine cast finger-post system that is only for annual use.

    Regards
    Myles

I have been looking at this recently.

Just google finger posts and loads of company’s come up.

    But they are very pricey.

    Hi Ian,

Thanks for that, but I’ve already tried that & all I can find are the regular permanent type which is not an option.

    hi,

I think you will have to make a base for them.

hmm..thanks Ian, but I was kind of hoping there may be something already out there that someone may have come across.. Also, like I said, cost is an issue here, so even if I got bases made up I still don’t think they’d want to go to the cost of, as you said "very pricey" standard finger posts.

I have used these in the past for Music Festivals, they are called tank traps, available from Rank Strand suppliers, they use scaffold poles, and can be buried or weights can be placed upon the base to ensure extra stability.

What about this way; been there, done it and bought the t-shirt.
Use black pvc downpipe for the posts, you can buy cast iron effect pvc downpipes, or scour the pvc to take the gloss off.
You can add a plain coupler half way for effect.
Screw a block of wood inside the bottom end (shaped so that four sides touch the inside of the tube).
The block needs to be about 5mm up from the bottom end so that when screwed to the base, the end of the pipe pulls it all straight.
Make a square plywood base, cut the corners off and paint matt black. Drill a small central hole.
Screw the pole to the base (up from underneath with a long fat screw).
For finger signs use matt black 5mm pvc. Pointed at one end, other end use a saw to cut a vertical slot 25mm in from the end and up to within 50mm from the top edge. This will slot over the top of the pipe and if you use the right size saw should be a grip fit.
You can cut 5mm wide by 50mm deep slots (about 5 equally spaced for position choice) in the top of the posts so that the boards sit flush with the top end plus this will help keep them straight.
You could possibly adapt Ashby post caps to fit and finish off.

Excellent!! Like those bases Graham, I just looked them up & I can get them in Dublin for around €7.50 each so that’s spot on. Not sure if the Scaffold pole may look a bit skimpy though…. But they could work well as a base for Peter’s idea giving it a bit of weight as they are about 16kg.

Love that idea Peter. That’s exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for. should look effective, but still be light weight, easy to move & store & adaptable for future changes. Perfect

    Much appreciated chaps :thumbup2: :thanks2:

Ha! Typical, having done all the research now, & put together a good plan, they’ve now just decided to go with timber ones sourced elsewhere. 😥

Oh well.. thanks all for your help & ideas, hopefully it will come in handy sometime in the future 😀

I was just about to mention this timber one I came across researching something else. But probably too late now.

Nice Steve, I’ll bookmark them for future use. Even the post supports bolted down would be a good temporary solution actually on any hard ground.

It’s usually how I end up finding things too, when looking for something else entirely 😀
