  • MIXED-MEDIA – Paint on Vinyl using "KRYLON FUSION"

Posted by TheDecalMan on February 26, 2006 at 8:01 am

    Hi Again – People !

I have just purchased some training DVD’s that Show & Explain “MIXED-MEDIA” Using Vinyl by Jay Lansburg. He explains that the best paints for mixed media are “Krylon” Brand Aerosols.

He said that the Krylon paint is a No Prep Paint the Slightly Melts the Vinyl on application so becomes part of the Surface on full curing.

I have Searched the Web & it appears that “Krylon” is a Product that is only available in the US. and because it’s a Solvent based product (Hazardous) no body will ship to the UK.

Does anybody know where “Krylon Fusion” paints can be Purchased in the U.K or the Equivalent Brand & Type in the UK. – I am not bothered if its Spray cans or Spray Gun Compatible as I have Gun’s & Compressor.

    Thanks in advance !

It does not help you I know, but Krylon paints used to be available here, but were discontiniued last year. Can do some great effects with them too. I think they were becoming too expensive to import.

Hi Shane – It Seems from what i can work out Shane Krylon is really only available off the Shelf if you live in the U.S. I have tried a product called PLASICOAT but found that it would adhere well but was lacking Plasticizers and would crack during application, OK if you want a Marble type effect !

    Thanks for that Shane !

See if you have a vinyl spray made by a company called ‘Special T’ over there. They are out of the states too, but the guy that owns the company (a kiwi) made a product that was similar to Krylon, but was not as volitile, and was easier to transport.

He sold them in litre bottle for use in airbrushes etc. and sold the plasticizers seperately as an addative.

Have not seen it here for a year or two, but australia was only his trial market, and we were always a very small market, but he was aiming for sales in europe and the states.

Sorry could not me of any more help.

Jay is a pretty cool little guy, I’ve met him.
In years past, Krylon was THE paint to spray on vinyl.
    Then they changed the formula!
    It didn’t adhere well.
Then Krylon came out with Fusion, which I suspect is just the regular old Krylon but costs $2 more per can.
What I do when I do this procedure is cut the vinyl, but don’t weed.
Go around the general area to be sprayed with a Sharpie marker so you can see where to apply the paint.
Get a good can of spray paint, not a cheap one.
Spray. Allow to dry a few hours.
Then re-spray with 1-Shot UV clear aerosol.
(I’ve also had it sprayed professionally with automotive clear)
Let dry about an hour, then weed.
DO NOT MASK FOR 24 HOURS.
Then just before application, apply a low-tack mask.
Apply wet with Rapid Tac and a felt squeegee.
Thoroughly wet the masking with Rapid Tac and carefully peel off.
Please do this on several test pieces before actually doing it on a job.
I have had some paints peel right off with the application tape….not fun.
Some folks scuff the vinyl lightly with a ScotchBrite pad.
Be sure you know the procedure well before offering it to a client as it can be very tricky.
A lot of people just spray using an airbrush and silkscreen inks or Creatix paints, or thinned 1-Shot lettering enamels.
    Love….Jill

Thank Very Much John – It’s Exactly what i have been looking For. 10/10 – I have bookmarked the site and will try and get some ordered this week.

also Thanks for your Advice Jill – You say you have met Jay. I have about 4 of his DVD’s and it always amazes me at just what can be done with vinyl “Even after Scrunching it up”, You can make a Fantastic Effect and still get it smooth onto the Vehicle.

    🙂

Hi Brian – Thanks for that , On one of the Demo’s he Recommends using One Shot as an alternative Paint. – I have already Tried – Cellulose in a Air Brush & Auto Spray cans – But Like you said they just don’t Bond Well and even with a Low Tack A/P they get easily damaged.

I Could patent the method as the “FLAKING PAINT EFFECT” 🙂

    ALL the best !

It’s also neat to do the baggie/Saran Wrap crinkle effect by scrunching it up & sticking it to vinyl or a panel.
    Then clear-coating it.

I have done this on my truck.
I cut a flame-shaped mask and applied it (no scuffing the truck)
Painted on 1-Shot pearlescent Blue Green with a 1″ Foamie (foam brush)
The I took a length of Saran Wrap (like for food, Glad Wrap or whatever)
and stuck it onto the paint after about 3 minutes.
I smoothed it down with my hand, then pulled it off FAST.
    Makes a neat marbley effect.
You can also scrunch up regular store bags and stick them onto the wet paint (like a fast daubing motion) for a crinkly look.
I have even seen folks cut the tines off a plastic fork (just slightly)
to shorten them, dip the fork in 1-Shot, and fling the paint onto masked areas.
Also seen weird things done with a toothbrush.
That was all at my first Letterhead meet…..

you can also get clear plastic primer from auto body suppliers which is in an aerosol can
this is a good key to get automotive paints to adhere the vinyl well i have used it with no problems but as said always test first

this is how i have done it
clean vinyl with a good cleaner
    ScotchBrite with a Grey pad
clean again and tack off with a tack cloth
    prime with plastic primer clear
    paint
allow 30Min’s to dry then weed
