Here’s something I have been working on today. It’s going to eventually be an 8′ 3D film reel. We are fabricating a steel frame for the "core", which the dibond will attach to to form the top and bottom (4 pieces of 4’x8′ dibond). I floodcoated the dibond today with grey vinyl, then applied the black cutouts. This took about 6 hours by myself, including setting up the file to cut, etc. The dibond was CNC router cut by one of our partners since my router isn’t big enough. The middle "film" section I am going to print on backlit material on our Roland VersaCamm. It should look pretty cool once finished. It’s going to be hung from a ceiling in one of our retail locations. I will post more pictures as this project continues.

    Hey Marek,

That looks like quite a project. It’ll look good.

I want to ask you a potentially stupid question though…

Do you, and others here, flood coat with no application tape on as in your photo?

I’ve always done it with application tape mainly because that’s how I thought it should be done, but if everyone else has the balls to do it sans tape then maybe I should give it a go.

Thanks for showing us the photos.

    Simon.

    Hi Simon,
    good question.
If it was a flat piece, with no cut-outs I probably would have used application tape. I have problems laying down vinyl this big when the surface isn’t even so I did it wet. It saved me wasting yards of vinyl trying to get it done dry. I applied all the black pieces dry with app. tape.
How do others do it when the surface has cut-outs like this?

Well I’ll have to grow my gonads and try it next time. 😕

Look forward to seeing the finished piece.

    Cheers

    Simon.

We finally got some time to do the next step. We attached the top of the reel to the steel frame, then I taped up the backlit film I printed. Now we need to attach the bottom, then hang it. I’ll post some more once it is in place.
