• Mimaki JV3

Posted by Tim Cockings on January 5, 2011 at 2:35 pm

Would someone please advise me on the issue of a Mimaki JV3 which has been offered for sale to me.

I currently run a Roland VP300 and wondered if the RIP software VersaWorks and Coreldraw X5 would be compatible with it?

It does however come with its own pc and Shiraz software but I’m so used to my own set-up that learning a new set of programmes is daunting.

Hopefully someone will have had some experience of my predicament

    Hi Tim
    Versaworks is exclusive to roland
so you cant run the Mimaki from it.
Mimaki have their own similar rip called rasterlink. it normally comes with printer so maybe your vendor has a copy of it lying around?

Corel draw will not work direct with the printer as far as I know you will need a rip.

Hi Peter and a Happy New Year to you.

This type of changeover always gives me angst. Its not the easiest thing in the World to move to a new operating system and software.

Might be best if i go for a demonstration first.

yep, but using Shiraz is not that daughting….

    1: Open file
    2: Choose profile
    3: Press Submit to queue
    4: Set Queue to live

    not hard to be honest

I used Publish to PDF in Corel Draw X3 to talk to Shiraz, gives me best results

Shiraz is very easy to use. You could learn the main features in 30 minutes.

I think you can download a trial from the AIT website. Give it a go. Like Dave said, it is very easy to use and gives good results. All the best mate. 😉

It depends what age of Shiraz and JV3 you’re being offered, and for what price. Although all JV3’s are fairly simple to get your head around, an early JV3S will be worth considerably less than and is a fair amount slower than one of the last JV3SPII’s for example. Same applies for the RIP. Shiraz is very easy to use and very easy to find a demo copy of the latest version if you do a Google search, but if it’s v5.x you’re being offered, it’s no longer supported by us (although I still have a copy and can still remember a surprising amount about supporting it) and it will be more expensive to upgrade later than v6.x.

All in all, a great printer and RIP combination but bare in mind there are variables. Post more details and we’ll give you more of an opinion.

    Good luck

    Stafford
