Military Badges – Copyright
I have been asked to print Military badges for a client who wants to apply these to a range of items to produce souvenirs for him to sell. I asked him if he knew of any copyright issues about doing this but he tells me most of these designs are now in the public domain as they have existed for (in some cases) hundreds of years.
I would have thought there would be some issues before any one could sell reproduction military insignia.
Any advice?

Phill, I would have thought so to, when I was in the Navy we had to get permission to reproduce the ships crest on things like lighters and "T" shirts that were to be sold. I would have thought someone like the MOD still held copyright for stuff like this.

Phill you could check istockphotos.com and look royaltiy free, apart from that I suppose you could contact the regiments concerned ??? or ask him to supply you with paper work that he is allowed to use them 😎

I’m with Lynn.
Check it out with two or three regiments. Their own museums and shops will be selling badges, so they may well know. If not you will at least get a feel for the concensus view. You might even get the opportunity to supply them. 🙂
I’ve seen replica badges, metal, full size and miniature, together with printed versions, for sale, but whether the manufacturers pay a licence I couldn’t say.
