  • Metamark MDX / MDXB wrap film offer..

Posted by Hugh Potter on May 1, 2018 at 8:35 am

I see Metamark have an offer on the above vinyls at £395 a bundle, Does anyone here use it regularly?

As a wrap film, how does this compare with the likes of avery, arlon, 3m etc??

Hybrid material, their MD5 used to be capable of pretty much anything MDX could do to a point, not a proper wrap film if you ask me, hence the price difference

It doesn’t have the repositional adhesives of the high end films so its quite a bit harder to work with..

I have used it when it first came out.

In my opinion, no it isn’t comparable to 3m, Avery, mainly due to the adhesive technology. That said I was impressed with the Arlon demo we went to, and will likely give their SLX a go.

I’ve used some unprinted & laminated MDX to add a white detail to our transit van. The 1080 has stuck well, but the MDX has popped out, but as I said, it’s not been laminated, and could be installer error.

However, I wouldn’t have any problem telling the customer we can do it with 3m/avery/Arlon for £xxx, or you can choose this material and we can do it at £xxx, with a shorter warranty.

I do find that you can spend forever explaining the different material choices to a client & all they hear is white noise, they will still end up on your doorstep wanting you to put it right when it fails, so polymeric gets relief cut when a recess is involved or they can opt for a cast wrap & recesses are covered but not much of a difference in fitting time if I’m honest

Just ordered 4 sets for a customer that loves it, but it only goes on flat panels. The only problem I have with it, is when it’s been printed, laminated and cut the backing paper is so thin it’s difficult to apply carrier tape to it without it rucking up.

Thanks guys, I thought it a little cheap for a true wrap film. I’ll probably swerve this time.

You say flatish pannels only but in their advertising they’re wrapping formula race cars?!

Absolutely fine for that, guaranteed till as long as it takes for you to get back in the van

I’ve used this material quite a few times for wrap jobs and wouldn’t hesitate to use it again. I’ve even used it to partially wrap Sprinter vans and its still stayed in the recesses a couple years later. I enjoy working with it, but I guess everyone has their own preferences on which materials they like. You wouldn’t go wrong ordering in a 25m bundle for stock if it was to be handy to you for odd partial wrap sections etc.

    Absolutely agree with this Hugh.

Just noticed Victory Design are also doing a package deal on their 1104 easy apply range, with a bundle of tools and consumables included. Check it out

I’ve personally used over 1000 metres of mdx, I prefer the non air release version, not had any failures even in deep recesses even on sprinter recesses. though there are easier films to fit the mdx seems to stay put just as well as more expensive films

Though I agree a lot of it is down to personal preference.

I was very sceptical at first but have been very surprised as to how well it holds.

Both versions can be difficult to fit when the temperatures get a bit warmer in the summer months but the same can be said of most wrap films.

is the Avery mpi1104 more a wrap film then? it’s on offer at around £800 + vat, what’s it’s normal price?

According to Victory the list price is £1047, I’ve never used it but I’m told it’s nowhere near as good as their 1105. I’m going to order a bundle to try soon, I’ll post how we find it compared to the 3M ij180

Spandex have also released a similar vinyl at a similar price to compete with the MDX! The small installations on show at the Sign show looked impressive!

Just spoken to a couple of suppliers who reckon the 1104/1105 ea both use the same adhesive, difference being that one is a 7/8yr and the other a 9/10… apparently both very similar when fitting, you’d be pressed to notice the difference.

anybody got any hands on experience to back those claims up?

Ordering a bundle of 1105 this morning so will post the results soon. Suppliers really only have customer feedback to go on & rarely have any handling or fitting experience. My supplier was told by a client who switched from 1105 to 1104 very briefly & reported that 1105 was his preferred film. I’m very keen to put it up against 3M. On sale or return so worth a punt.

    Thanks Kevin,

I have a couple of big jobs coming up (potentially more than a roll on each vehicle  ) and want to be sure to choose the right film, from a cost perspective and quality. bit of a headache inducing choice out there!

Just to add my 10p to this. We used the meta mark today and I thought it was quite good. But then we don’t do this everyday. Quite easy to work worth.

But then I’ve never tried the top end vinyls.

    Nice,

looks like I just missed out on getting a bargain bundle in, realised today was the 1st and they won’t let the offer run over, up to £495 as an ongoing price, though I see spandex have 3m 180mc bundle at £699, for the extra couple of hundred..

    Quick update:
Fitting MPi 1105 today, printed really well.
2 hours into the fit & ignoring the moaning from the fitter (my son, moaning as standard) & have to say nice material to work with. Only working from waist down on a t6 so not a real test but so far so good

Yeah we’ve found mpi1105 really good. Doesn’t grab the same way oracal 3551 does

I muscled in to wrap the bonnet just to try it out, not massively different to 3M but does whiten out a bit when stretched ( may be a profile issue, I just used a generic one ) but I have to say overall, very impressed with it, my lad stopped his gripes quite quickly which is unusual when testing out a different material

Excuse me jumping in a little late on this one……..

Vinyl is a very personal thing, every applicator will have materials he or she likes and doesn’t like for various reasons. Personally I’ve always tried to get on with as many materials as possible so that I can find the right material for my client as opposed to the right material for me. I do still have my favorites though. For both flat plotting work and wrapping alike.

Lets face it, 3M material is always going to perform well (everyone knows 3M across the board do good products), but sit on the higher end of the price bracket.

Having worked in big cities doing jobs for corporate companies and small rural towns where clients were one man bands and farmers, 3M is not best placed for each of these clients. If I was only used to using the high end materials, I’m either cutting my profit or missing out on the work. Neither are acceptable in my book. Only solution is to have a range of materials you can call on to suit the budget, application and your own ability.

I was in a position some years back to be approached by Metamark to trial the MDX before it went on general sale. All the normal tests etc had been done and it had been trialed within the normal channels first. They needed a test run on something live with an on the ground vinyl wrapper, who would be honest and real about the material. Having tested wrap materials and reviewed them for other manufacturers, I was asked to try the MDX. I had a job that was 4 off MWB, LR split rear door transits. They were all the same design, part wrapped which included total rear doors, about a third of the side and the bonnet.

The price fitted perfectly with my clients budget and my margins were where any sign maker / wrapper would want them to be. That’s the first box ticked. Printed on a Mimaki JV33 and was a mix of solid colour, images, text etc etc and again, second box ticked. I went with the non-MetaScape system (if memory serves although not 100% sure) as I’d rather the confidence in knowing I have a slightly stronger and quicker grab. Again, each applicator will have an opinion on this. As they should! I have used these systems but prefer them only when there is no sharp/deep contours. Find them best when squeegee does the work and little to no heat is required so the stretch is minimal and only through tension and application.

Material performed well and the job lasted well. Client was extremely happy and returned for other work. Vehicle and general signage. If memory serves, all the vans were done in 5 days which includes clean down, prep and application. I had a second guy helping who was learning so I was training him on the job too.

I have also used this material on internal display items that have been wrapped for photo shoots, again, for this job it ticked all the boxes.

I do think the material fits very nice in the market and wouldn’t hesitate to use it again.

We used avery1104 with matt overlaminate for this, wasn’t overly keen on it & had a high grab and was a bugger to pull back & reposition.

Quite liked the metamark mdx? (air escape) one… we used it for this, only a small wrap customer wanted specific colour so we had to print.. would like to try it on full or half wraps to see how it managed in the recess etc
