  • Mercedes, do they use a different wax?

    Hi all,

We part wrap Merc Sprinters and Vitos on a weekly basis, had the contract for three years with no issues / failures etc.
In the last couple of weeks we have noticed some of the vinyl (Oracal 951) is lifting a day or two after install, fortunately we have managed to sort any issues before collection, but it is a concern. Has anyone any info if Merc are using a different wax or something? – we use a three stage cleaning process, wet soap wash, Avery Surface Cleaner and 3M Surface prep system, making sure vehicle is dry before app.

    Many thanks….

Do a search for copolymer remover, there are a few on the market.
valeters pride sell this in Letchworth, worth a go

If the vehicle has been degreased properly then a polish as such should not be an issue.

Was the van or workshop cold?

also, although a cast, 951 is not a wrapping film.

One thing we have noticed when we prepare our vans for a wrap is, that after using the 3m surface prep, the vehicle still feels greasy. This is due to the 3m surface prep not "drying" properly, and if you look on the surface of where you have wiped, you will see that it still looks wet. We now dry the vehicle with a hot air torch after wiping to make sure the 3m surface prep has dried out properly. I don’t know if this is why your vinyl is lifting or not but thought i would pass on the information anyway

Many thanks for advice. The vehicles are at an ambient temp between 15 – 18 degrees and kept in overnight following film fitting.

You may have a point Reza, I know that the 3M SP needs to be completely removed and dry, but I’ll check with fitters on this to make sure.

    Many thanks.

The 3M surface prep is Petrolium distillate, it won’t flash off or dry out, it needs applying with one cloth then removing with another.

    Hope that helps a little.

    Hey Gill, how are you?

Yes we use two cloths, going to go through a step by step guide with fitters to see if we can find a problem.

Still think Merc are putting on a different protectant though.
