Medion PC’s (Aldi deal) – any good?
Hi All
Anyone had any experience with Medion PC’s?
Aldi currently have a 3Ghz P-IV dual core, 800Mhz FSB, 1Gb, 128Mb nVidea, 250Gb, 3*TV tuners, wireless network, wireless kybd/mse, XP home (on recovery disk), Works, Sony DVD RW dual layer multi format, Sony DVD ROM, 7in1 card reader, firewire, 3 year warranty, quiet BTX, RIP/edit/play SW suite etc. etc. etc for £750 (no monitor though)
Seems a good bargain and I’m minded to go and get one tomorrow if no one shoots them down in flames tonight!

spec the same thing up on dell, or pc world, then you can compare.

i personally wouldnt…as a few folk i know have had problems from the start with them & laptops….but their customer returns is the best..no quibbles what so ever and i think their warranties are for 36 months, but you never know you might be one of the lucky ones and the pc would be okay, they are all made in germany too 😀

I bought a Medion from tesco with monitor etc years ago when the Pentium III 500Ghz was the very latest processor. It was all German built and still runs my Gerber Edge to this day. Only item I’ve had to replace was the CD Rom.
I’ve just bought a much newer Medion, tower only from makro, and am still in the process of running in it in, but so far so good. -

PeterWould recommend Dell too, but if you spec up a PC they can be quite expensive. Best to look out for one of their deals.

Take it from me, only 128MB, in this day and age!!! You 256MB to run windows XP confortably and for video related then maybe 512MB+ partculary if you edit video.
DELL is my first port of call, the price and quality of systems are very good indeed.
However if your looking for a TV-PC to run a screen (like for kids) then consider a Microsoft Media-Centre computer… they are XP with an overlay program for the media.
DELL have pretty good deals vs system builders these days.

the 128MB was for video card – it comes with 1GB of RAM. Guess that should be enough for most things.
I know someone who bought a laptop from Aldi about 18 months ago – still working fine except for battery (was always plugged in rather than using the battery so guess didnt help).
Think the spec looks good for price and would probably go for one if I needed a new computer.

I am always cautious of mothboards and the quality, I run a XP Pro on Asus A8N SLI Deluxe and is rock solid.
However Dell gets my vote

Have done a like for like comparison on the Dell website and purely from a Hardware perspective (including the Medion 17″ TFT) then I reckon the Medion is £200 – £300 cheaper than a Dell box. Plus the software package with the Medion is quite extensive, also I notice that the DVD RW is a Lightscribe version.
Of course the Dell ‘deals’ promoted by mailer and on the telly are cheaper than a build your own spec version on their website but even so the Medion price now looks even better to me.
My local Aldi had pallets of them yesterday and has only 10 left today – I’ll be down their first thing to pick one up.

I personally find the best deals are at PC World Buisness!
Just bought a great IBM ThinkCentre desktop PC for £500 +VAT (monitor not included).

Price isn’t the answer… however if this is a games machine then buy an AMD processor and with Geforce 6 or 7 (maybe with SLI if you can). If speed then buy Amd 64bit or a Intel P4 with HT or a Dual Core, everything else will be on the sales in Jan as it’s all old hat :lol1:

not meaning to start up another MAC vs PC debate. ( search anywhere on the web for this ), but having used both Macs and PCs extensively for over a decade, I decided to buy out of the MAC subculture, for exaclty that reason. It had become an elitist subculture, and I didnt want anything to do with it anymore.
I am now a happy home PC user.

Got a Dell earlier this month, just a base model (2.5ghz celeron) but they had a few deals on. No delivery charge and double memory (512mb) so I got the box, keyboard and optical mouse for £175 delivered.
Good enough for anything to do with sign writing and office use.

For thsoe who prefer Dells, try http://www.europc.co.uk
They do refurbs at good prices, and still with 3 year on-site warranty.
I’ve bought a few computers from them over the last few years, and can recommend them.
They also do other brands, and peripherals. Worth a look.
