Maximum sign panel size on a single post question
Posted by Myles Brewer on July 28, 2021 at 1:31 pmHi All, I’m just wondering what would be the maximum width of sign panel most of you would fit to a single post (76mm Dia) using the usual channel & anti-rotational clips? If the panel was between 600-900mm height.
Regards
Myles

Hi Myles
I wouldn’t go over 800mm wide on one post here on the east coast, I think you are west of Ireland so 600mm wide on a good day. Really depends on the how exposed the location is they can twist on the post in very windy spots. I have seen 1m x 1m on a single post.

Thanks for that Joe & yes west of Ireland & they’re going to be in a very exposed location although also very close to the ground. I had suggested 600 & customer was just asking if I could make it any wider, possibly up to 900 but I thought it could be an issue potentially!

unless it was something like fingerposts, I wouldn’t go over two feet wide for a sign on a single 76mm post. I think you will be fine on the depth to mate.
Rotation of the sign panel is one problem that can occur.
dependant on the height of the post and depth of the sign, the sign may be too low due to the height and passing pedestrians walking or on a cyclist might hit it. 🤨
make sure to round the corners.
also, the overhang of the sign should not pass off the grass onto the pathway, road or whatever.
even if the sign is situated perfectly the size of the sign or signs on the post create a wind load and can bend, snap etc. location subject to high winds and more should be also taken into consideration but as I said, the size you have stipulated should be fine.
make sure you use 3 – 4 lengths of channel rail on the rear for that size.-
Hopefully pedestrians & cyclists won’t be an issue regarding the height as they’re going on an airfield!!🤣 So they actually must be kept low & posts must be frangible. We’ve established that standard 76mm Dia. (or smaller) galvanised with 3mm wall are classed as frangible. The wind would be the main factor here regarding the width but with 3 to 4 clips & keeping to 600×900 hopefully we’ll be safe enough.
