    Hi Guys

Customer has changed his mind and wants these flat cut letters and not raised stand off letters but he wants them this thick. I can only find 19mm thickness maximum in my price lists.

Does anybody know who cuts letters out of this thickness foam (look like it is about 25 – 30mm)

    cheers

    Warren

Looking at that I would say it is MDF 25mm, doesn’t polystyrene have a rough holey texture?

Arent they just 10mm letters stuck together?
Its quite a common way to get the thickness you want.

    No Steve

The edges are far too perfect for that, this is a new sign put up about a week ago so it looks prefect at the moment and can tell you the edges are smooth and solid.

very much doubt it is 2 glued together

Still think it must be MDF

If its 2 glued together and finished correctly you shouldn’t really be able to tell if it is or not, depends who cut it with what, but Ive seen letters built up that couldn’t be distinguished from straight cnc cut letters if done right, especially if coated/painted.
If you have seen them up dead close and there’s no visible join then they either are the latter or maybe mdf or injected.

I think these guys are quite a big chain, so they may be resin cast letters (from a mould). I have seen them only briefly and they do look good.

edit – isnt that a photocell on the first picture, if so the sign might be illuminated (letters only by the look of things) if thats the case then they will have to be built up acrylics

    Hi Signsurfer

No, def not illuminated as I have had a real close up look, I would almost put money on them being MDF.

I have since found a supplier of 25mm foam PVC, cheaper than MDF but still very expensive 😕

    up to the customer now.

    cheers

    Warren,

I have posted before about finishing the edges on foam pvc letters, the problem is that the routers will not/cannot cut through in one pass and has to step down 10mm at time which results in a stepping on the side of the letters, then you have the problem of sealing the edges, if you dont the paint is just soaked up, coat after coat and leaves a poor finish on the edge, we had some reasonable results last time by wiping the edge with a cloth soaked in cellulose thinners, it helped but it was far from perfect.

good luck, let us know how you go on.
