We have a job on that moment that’s turning into a nightmare

Design agency supplied graphics – They have done logo and branding job for client – referred to us for signs. 20 internal and 20 external largest 40″x 30″

Design is made up of CMYK colours – solid blocks with 2 of them % tints of a single colour. I.e. 100% blue/grey then they have set it at 80% then 50%

Took the job on the basis that we could get within + or – 20% of these colours. I wanted to use vinyl for all. We have sorted through oracle, 3m avery metamark all series etc. and got the closest and best match. Customer has rejected not one but 3 goes at this.

We then tried digital print – used a roland, and outside companies with JV3 and Tiara all prints from the supplied artwork comes out with a degree of speckled on the graduated tone. Again not acceptable.

Any suggestions of things to try from here?

You could get a screen printer to flood coat white vinyl to the exact PMS colours and cut it. The only drawback is it makes the vinyl really soft.

Thanks Ian – any suggestions who would be a good source?

we have done this in the past too (Flood coating a screen print) . You’ll probably have to buy a qty to get a good price, but I’d be concerned your customer may still not be happy, and you’ll be stuck with the stuff without payment. It is hard to get a screen printer to run a small sample for proofing.

You may have issue with the life expectancy too. make sure they clear coat the final print to get the maximum life.

I’d be asking the design company to specify the vinyl brands as I’d be suprised if they didn’t have the vinyl swatches too.

If it gets too hard, I’d be walking.

Hi, I got a flyer through the post recently for colour matching vinyl, it may be worth a try. The company is called Rapid R and does pantone, corporate colours onto sheets 900mm x 600mm, four sheets £19 (that’s what it says on the flyer). Tel 01295 70 90 81 e-mail rapid@hotmail.co.uk. Good luck.

    Cheers
    Fred
